If one clings to this, it is said to be operating on the characteristics of true clinging, and not meditating on the meaning of the Prajnaparamita. If one understands the object of negation as merely negation without elaboration, it means that one is not operating on the Prajnaparamita, but on characteristics. Therefore, the "Entering the Middle Way" also says, "Those five aggregates are also viewed as empty by nature." Also, as the "Entering the Middle Way" says, "Therefore, the yogi who views emptiness of self and what belongs to self will be liberated." And so on, it is said many times that one must view emptiness and selflessness, and it should be understood in this way so that there is no contradiction. Otherwise, if it is said that operating on characteristics is not in the unborn state, and if one operates in the unborn state, it is said that one is not operating on the Prajnaparamita, which would be contradictory. If one does not understand this method of cutting off elaboration through two negations, and mistakenly believes that some scriptures say not to cling to emptiness or non-emptiness, self or non-self, etc., it will cause great obstacles to cultivating the view of selflessness, and this seems to happen often. Furthermore, the "Worldly Examination" says, "This is to negate existence itself, not to completely annihilate non-existence. When it is said 'it is not black,' it is not said 'it is white.'" Therefore, some think that it is unreasonable to take the mere negation of the object of negation as the thesis of inference. To this, one can quote the words from the "Prajnaparamita Sutra": "It is only the negation of inherent existence that has been done, and it has not been said to be the non-existence of things." And the commentary also explains that this is a non-affirming negation. It can also be understood through examples, for example, when it is said "this is not black," it is only negating black, and it is not said to be white other than that. Therefore, saying that it is white is negated, but merely negating black, it is not said that it is not negated. Similarly, saying "no self-nature" is only negating existence, and it is not said that in addition to existence, one clings to non-self-nature. Therefore, it must be explained that it is only the negation of inherent existence, that word does not express it, the mind does not take it as an object, and it cannot be proven by reasoning. Although it is not said that things do not exist, in the "Blazing Logic" it says, "For the arising of earth and so on in the ultimate sense, it is only the negation of its own nature, not the negation of other entities and things.
