It does not preclude establishment. Similarly, the word "merely" in the statement "merely designated" does not preclude the existence of a meaning that is not a name, nor does it preclude the meaning established by valid cognition. However, it does not mean that everything designated by names exists conventionally; rather, it precludes the existence of things by their own nature. Therefore, as stated in the Ratnavali, "Apart from the imputation of terms, what in the world exists or changes?" As such, not everything that is established by the power of convention exists, even if it is not established as existing by the power of convention. For example, there is no difference even if one cannot find even a little bit when searching for how the meaning of the designated object exists in the terms "seeing form through offerings" and "seeing through offerings of real objects." However, the former, which is seen as non-existent in name, is harmed by valid cognition, while the latter, which is seen, can be refuted by valid cognition. Because what exists in name is harmed by valid cognition, existence and non-existence in name are completely different. The reason for this is that if a real object is sought by reason, it must be found, and if it is not found, it can be refuted. However, mere existence does not necessarily have to be found by reason, so even if it is not found, it cannot be prevented. This principle also depends on distinguishing between what cannot be examined by reason, what is harmed by reason, what is not found by rational knowledge, and what is prevented by it. If, when searching and examining, the examiner cannot possibly find existence, and therefore does not accept the meaning of existence in worldly convention, then how can it not be contradictory to accept one of the alternatives when examining whether one is born or unborn, come or not come in the world? The methods of examination are completely different, because the former merely establishes the terms of birth and coming, and is not satisfied with that alone, but seeks the method of examining how the meaning of the established term exists, while the latter does not examine in that way. Therefore, since the method of examination is similar to the former, when examining, one does not accept the meaning of existence that the examiner can find, but although one accepts the meaning of the latter examination, one does not accept existence by its own nature, so how can they be the same? Svatantrikas believe that such an examination as before is not an examination of whether or not it is established as the ultimate truth, so they also believe that the meaning sought in that way exists, and they also believe that it is established by its own characteristics.

If one thinks that just because there are no such terms, cause and effect, etc., are completely impossible, that's what I think. So, according to this school, from where do we grasp the boundary for measuring whether or not something is established in the ultimate sense? Because this school does not consider cause and effect, etc., to be existent by virtue of being established by nominal terms, therefore, for the basis of nominal terms—eye consciousness, etc.—for the consciousness that is not confused about the self-nature of the object of appearance and attachment, it is not established according to how it appears, but exists according to the reality of the thing itself, and this is what exists ultimately; conversely, it is considered to exist conventionally. Therefore, from measuring whether or not there is such a self-nature, one can measure whether or not it is established in the ultimate sense. If one does not understand the difference between the ways of measuring of worldly people and philosophical schools, and whether or not philosophical schools are established in the ultimate sense, then accepting the meaning of measurement is not even recognized in nominal terms. Thus, both Madhyamikas have explained much, and great errors will arise, and it is also very difficult to distinguish the difference between existence and non-existence in nominal terms, so it should be understood from other detailed explanations. As mentioned earlier, holding onto existence through investigation is only established by philosophical schools, so although the two co-emergent self-graspers do not grasp in that way, they do grasp it as existing by its own nature. Therefore, if it exists in that way, then it must be found when the investigator searches, and it is also reasonable to stop it through investigation when it is stopped. If one establishes cause and effect that are empty of a nature that cannot be found by doing the investigation method shown earlier, then no one will think that it is not a Prasangika, so if one does not find it by investigating in that way, one thinks that the reasoning of the investigator can stop all cause and effect, etc., and holding this as the view of this school is very unreasonable. The "Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness" also says: "This arises from this, do not obstruct this worldly law." The "Refutation of Objections" also says: "If we do not accept conventional terms, we will not explain." Thus it is said. Secondly, the wisdom of the meaning of suchness is to realize that the object grasped by ignorance does not exist. And this arises from determining with reason that can harm the existence of the object and can establish the non-existence of the object, rather than just being accustomed to withdrawing the mind from the object and the subject.
