Our school holds that the two kinds of self that are absent in persons and phenomena are very different. Because of this reason, even if one realizes the selflessness of persons, it is inconsistent whether or not one needs to realize the selflessness of phenomena. The imputed object to be refuted is absent for those whose minds have not been transformed by tenets, so it is not a factor that binds all sentient beings in samsara. Therefore, the binding factor is the innate self-grasping that both have. The *Hundred Treatises* says, "What is seen by discrimination is binding; this should be refuted here." It says that attachment to inherent existence is binding, so its object should be refuted. Secondly, the discrimination that grasps the object to be refuted is not just any discrimination that grasps existence, but rather grasps existence in the ultimate sense or by its own character. Regarding this, the Buddhas taught the Dharma, relying completely on the two truths. It is said that one must know the distinction between the two truths, where existence such as arising and ceasing is conventional, and non-existence such as arising and ceasing is ultimate. Moreover, the *Garland of Jewels* also says, "Likewise, in the illusory world, arising and ceasing appear to exist, but in the ultimate sense, arising and ceasing do not exist." Therefore, it does not negate merely the existence of arising and ceasing, but rather existence in the ultimate sense is the object to be refuted, and knowing that such a grasping mind is a mind that grasps the object to be refuted. Similarly, "These are not from their own nature; therefore, afflictions are not truly existent." It says to add the distinction of existing from their own nature and truly existing. Moreover, the *Garland of Jewels* says, "If the seed is false, how can its arising be true?" Adding the distinction of truth, and there are also many examples of adding distinctions in definitive meaning sutras. Essence, nature, existing by its own character, and existing by its own essence are the same, and it is also often said that it is established from itself. Regarding this, the Svātantrika Madhyamikas believe that if one adds the distinctions of ultimate, true, truth, and suchness, then one can refute existence, but if one does not add these, even if one adds existing by essence or existing from essence, one cannot refute it. The schools of Buddhapālita and Candrakīrti believe that if one adds any one of the former or latter two distinctions, the second is not necessary, so they consider the two to be the same, and do not add the distinction of ultimate to the object to be refuted.

It is not a combination, nor is it considered that not combining the two can prevent birth and so on. As it says in the commentary on the "Entering the Middle Way": Knowing that the establishment of cause and effect of images without inherent existence, which wise person would think that things like form and feeling, which exist inseparably from cause and effect, are merely existent, thereby determining that they have inherent existence? Therefore, even if one thinks they exist, they are not inherently born. Here, the difference between merely existing and inherently existing is distinguished. If these are not distinguished, then as long as a thing exists, it must have its own nature; once it does not have its own nature, it completely disappears, thereby not being able to transcend the two extremes of superimposition and denial. As it says in the commentary on the "Hundred Verses": If according to the view of those who say that things exist, then as long as that thing exists, it must have its own nature. When it is separated from its own nature, that thing does not exist in any way, like the horns of a donkey, so it cannot transcend the two, therefore, all the manifest desires here are difficult to establish. Therefore, because it does not have its own nature, it is freed from all extremes of existence; and because one can establish cause and effect without inherent existence on it, it is freed from all extremes of non-existence. This seems to be the characteristic of these two teachers explaining the intention of the noble ones, therefore, it is very important to distinguish between the two existences and the two non-existences. Existence by its own characteristics and existence that is merely established by the power of convention are not the same, and all conventional existences are said to be established by the power of convention. The way of establishing by the power of convention is: I have accumulated karma, I experience the results, etc. When establishing these conventions, if one searches for how the basis of establishing the convention exists, then each of the eyes, ears, etc., and their collection are not me, and there is no me other than them, this is how the person is without inherent existence. Even so, if I do not see, etc., it would be harmed by the conventional valid cognition, therefore it is established as existing, but because it does not exist by its own nature, it is established as existing by the power of convention. The word "merely" in "merely established by the power of convention" also uses valid cognition to negate the existence of the inherent nature of things.
