The punishment of near pacification, and whether the Tathagatas appear or not, the Dharma-nature of all dharmas is the only existent. Thus, it is constant, and the Dharma that abides in sentient beings is one, namely the four foods. This is one meaning. The Dharma that protects the world is two, namely knowing shame and having embarrassment. This is a different meaning. The world comes from there and goes from here, thus saying that there are eight things such as birth is unreasonable. To this, as quoted earlier from the Commentary, the answer is given in reliance on knowledge and appearance. Such disputes arise because, by way of preventing establishment, birth and so on are established as conventional truth, so the reversal of samsara and so on also exist in conventional truth, which is not contrary to the sutras. However, if there is no establishment of those conventional meanings that is established by valid cognition, then just as if a rope is taken as a snake, nothing such as the cause and effect of the snake can be established, so saying that those are conventional truths is not established, and the fault cannot be avoided. If there is an establishment without fault that is established by valid cognition, then it is merely wanting the meaning that is established as ultimately real, and not admitting the mere name, and arguing with that in mind. The answer to this, as will be explained in the twenty-fourth chapter, is that it is necessary to know all those establishments, in a rational way, to know that they are feasible in this system and not feasible in others. If it is not like that, for the meaning that exists in conventional truth, there is no place to accept liberation and so on, and if it is necessary to deliver it only to illusion, then it is a great fault of view. Therefore, if one agrees with the idea that the dharmas of conventional truth are like that, and argues about whether or not there are other dharmas that truly exist, then it is not the system of either the Madhyamikas or the proponents of the nature of things. In particular, since conventional truth has been regarded as such, there is no place to establish a meaning that is established by valid cognition, so the proponent and the vow of the proponent, and all the scriptures and reasoning that establish it, are not established by valid cognition, so establishing that the Dharma truly exists by valid cognition is a laughing matter. If one prevents those from being established in the ultimate, and skillfully establishes the meaning that is established by valid cognition in name, then the Thusness and the Dharmakaya and other ultimate

Even if all dharmas are not truly established, it is sufficient to acknowledge them as nominal entities. If these are not truly established, then saying that the realization of suchness and the Dharma-kaya to be attained do not exist, etc., is meaningless. Therefore, those of the self-schools in the sacred land who believe that dharmas are true, put great effort into proving that things are true, and as long as they believe that it is not truly established, they do not argue about whether others are truly established or not, which is a great characteristic that surpasses the sophists who do not understand reason. Therefore, saying that things that benefit and harm sentient beings are true is a great source of error, while saying that unconditioned phenomena that cannot produce results are true is a smaller source of error. Therefore, in this treatise as well, it is said: 'If conditioned phenomena are not truly established, then how can unconditioned phenomena be established?' Like this, great effort is made to negate that things are true. In this way, if the sutras say both that arising and ceasing, etc., exist and that they do not exist, then in order to eliminate the doubt about which of these two is the teaching with true meaning and which is the teaching with intention, and to eliminate the wrong view of grasping the provisional as definitive, this treatise distinguishing the definitive and provisional is composed. The detailed meaning of these two can be understood from the essential points of the two chariot-makers who have well explained the distinction between the definitive and the provisional. Secondly, if it is said that showing the absence of the eight characteristics such as cessation in dependent origination, if this is the case for all things to be negated, then it would be sufficient to say only the two verses 'no cessation,' so it is too much. It is not either of these two cases. What is it then? Although dependent origination has infinite differences, the reason for establishing the eight is that these are the main points of contention. Because most of those who assert the nature of things show that things have their own nature through these eight characteristics such as cessation. The point of contention is whether cessation and so on have their own nature or not, which can also be known from the occasion, and it is also said in Buddhapalita. If, as Parhita says, the dispute is about what the meaning of arising and ceasing, etc., is, then it deviates from the meaning of the occasion. Moreover, from the point of view of the entity, it is the arising and ceasing of gain and loss.
