Because I exist by nature, and there is suffering associated with it. The scriptures say that the five aggregates of clinging are suffering, therefore it also exists, and suffering is not without a basis, therefore it has a basis, and that basis is me. To refute this, there are two parts: refuting that suffering exists by its own nature; applying this reasoning to other dharmas. The first part has two parts: establishing the thesis; explaining the argument. The first part is: To this, some opponents assert that suffering is created by me, some assert that suffering is created by something other than itself, others assert that suffering is created by both self and other, and some assert that suffering arises without a cause, therefore, suffering should not be regarded as arising from its own nature in any case. This is establishing the thesis. The Samkhyas believe that suffering is born from the nature of suffering, while the Vaisheshikas and others believe that suffering is created by the self of the person. Both our own school and other schools believe that the cause of suffering and the nature of suffering are different. Those who assert that it is created by both, such as the naked ascetics, believe that what is created by the body is the suffering of the body, therefore it is created by oneself, and what is created by life is different from suffering, therefore it is created by others, and so on. The Charvakas assert that it arises without a cause. The second part has two parts: refuting that suffering is created by self and other individually; refuting that it is created by the combination of both and asserting that it is without cause. The first part has three parts: with regard to suffering, refuting that it is created by self and other individually; with regard to the person, refuting that it is created by each individually; explaining other arguments to prove that it is not created by self and other individually. The first part has two parts: with regard to suffering, refuting that it is created by oneself; with regard to suffering, refuting that it is created by others. The first part is: If suffering is created by myself, then the nature of suffering will create itself. Therefore, it will not arise depending on causes and conditions, because if it already exists, it does not need to create itself, and if it does not exist, it cannot become a creator. It is dependent arising, because depending on these aggregates at the time of death, there will be those aggregates belonging to the time of birth.
