If birth and death inherently exist, then they would become either prior, subsequent, or simultaneous. Since the sequence of prior, subsequent, and simultaneous is unreasonable, birth and death do not inherently exist. If that does not exist, then let go of the assertion that birth and death inherently exist, therefore the self that performs the actions of birth and death inherently exists! Secondly, samsara, that is, the birth and death of beings alone, not only does not have the prior extreme, that is, the sequence of prior, subsequent, and simultaneous, but also for cause and effect, characteristic and characterized, feeling and feeler, one should also understand that there is no prior extreme and, represented by that, the sequence of subsequent and simultaneous. Furthermore, if the cause inherently exists in the prior, then the effect must also exist at that time, but since it does not exist, it would become without cause. If the effect is prior, it would also become without cause. If cause and effect both exist simultaneously, then both would become without cause, as previously stated. If the characteristic is prior, then there is nothing to characterize, and if the characterized is prior, then the characteristic does not exist. If the characteristic and characterized both inherently exist simultaneously, then they would become established without relying on each other. If the feeler is prior, who would be the feeler of? If the feeling is prior, without a feeler, feeling is unreasonable. If both are simultaneous, then they would become established without relying on each other and become without cause. Through the explanation of samsara, not only should one understand cause and effect, etc., but also for any other meaningful things, whether it is valid cognition and the object of valid cognition, or knowledge and the object of knowledge, or what is to be proven and what proves it, or parts and the whole, etc., one should also apply the statement that there are not three, such as the prior extreme. Secondly, in this way, birth, old age, etc., and cause and effect, etc., do not inherently exist, and this is also proven by profound scriptural authority. And in order to show that all the scriptures teach that phenomena are not connected to the prior and subsequent extremes, and that there is no death, transmigration, and birth, and that samsara is not observed, etc., only the aspect of combining with the definitive meaning scriptures is mentioned. As it says in the Cloud of Jewels Sutra: When the wheel of Dharma is turned, it is originally peaceful and unborn, its nature is nirvana.

Yours. The Protector has taught the dharmas. Likewise, from the very beginning, they are empty, and the future dharmas, what has passed is nonexistent, without a place, devoid of a place. The nature of illusion, always without essence. Everything is pure, utterly pure like the sky. The Victorious Ones teach the Dharma, but it is inexhaustible and cannot be seen. This Dharma has been without self from the beginning, without sentient beings. Even if they are well taught, they will not be exhausted. It is taught only after being examined as a mere imputation. No end is found in samsara, and whatever arises before has no characteristics. In order to know the future time, actions and deeds will thus enter and change, and both the beginning and the end will occur. All dharmas are always foolish and empty in nature. Know that everything is without self. Thus it is said. Here, "from the beginning" and "original" are the words for "first." Peace is the realm of the peace of wisdom of all dharmas, because it is unborn, it is nirvana by nature, and because its essence exists, it is emptiness. Then, with four lines, the three times are empty from the beginning, like illusion and like the sky. Then, with five lines, the dharmas are empty of the self of the person from the beginning, and the Dharma taught by the Victorious Ones is also taught only as an imputation. Then, with five lines, the dharmas have no beginning or end, and in order to understand them in the future as well, by engaging in activities now, in the future, the fruits of the beginning and the end will be obtained in accordance with one's fortune. Then, with two lines, it is taught that the dharmas should be known as the meaning of selflessness, which is empty of the self of the knower's essence. The third is that if the person who revolves in samsara and the actions of that revolving, such as birth, old age, sickness, death, and cause and effect, existed by their own nature, then there would be no way to establish any of the terms such as birth. Therefore, it is said that the one who revolves and the continuous birth and death are only reasonable as an establishment of terms, and one should be certain of this. That which is called "examining the beginning and the end" is the nature of eight verses, the eleventh explanation. Second, there are three parts to refuting the sign that suffering exists as a basis: explaining the text of the treatise, combining it with definitive scriptures, and summarizing the meaning and indicating the name. The first is: Here it is said.
