The teacher, the great being, the noble Nāgārjuna, who makes the doctrine extremely clear, possesses irrefutable wisdom and compassion. He clarifies the unsurpassable vehicle of the Tathāgata as prophesied. First, he attained the stage of great joy, and later he passed away to the Pure Land of Sukhāvatī. In the future, in the world called "Extremely Pure Light," he will become the Buddha called "Jñānākara-light Tathāgata," perfectly completing the deeds. How was such a treatise translated into the land of snow? By the decree of the great king, the lord of great power, glorious Lha-btsan-po. The great Indian abbot, the Madhyamika Jñānagarbha Wisdom Essence), and the Tibetan translator, the monk Cogro Klu'i rgyal-mtshan, translated it from Chinese into Tibetan and carefully revised the words and meanings. This text has four hundred and forty-nine shlokas and is divided into two and a half volumes. Later, it was very well revised by the Pandit Hasumati of the city of Dpe-med and the Tibetan translator, the Shakya monk Nyima Drak, in accordance with the commentary. The great treasure of the Sugata's well-spoken words, for beings wandering in the thicket of delusion, the rain of the nectar of the sacred Dharma moved by compassion, whatever has been bestowed is the best and most excellent of all. That which, when realized, uproots all faults, that is the profound talk of dependent origination. It is called emptiness of inherent existence, and it is also rightly proclaimed in the Middle Way free from extremes. This path is praised above all the scriptures, but it has not become clear because it is completely obscured by the clinging views of self and other schools. Seeing this, the second Buddha, Nāgārjuna, as a guide, prophesied in many sutras and tantras, and explained the essence of the Buddha's teaching, emptiness. The supreme text that explains the freedom from the extremes of existence and non-existence is the glorious Fundamental Wisdom. This itself, holding the supreme tradition of the noble ones, although many commentaries by scholars have clarified it, the accomplished master Buddhapālita alone has explained the complete intention of the noble ones as it is. Like scriptures, it moves unhindered in the sky, possessing the white light that dispels the heat of clinging.

The two commentaries known as Laden Chandrakirti, are like the sun and moon in the sky. This meaning is subtle and extremely difficult to understand, and has greatly declined for a long time. Seeing this situation, the treasure of wisdom, the venerable one, constantly relied on as a supreme deity, and studied extensively all the scriptures in general, and especially the Madhyamaka scriptures. Therefore, this commentary, which comes from a good understanding of the profound meaning, as agreed by the two great scholars, is well accomplished by the great accumulation of merit, and protects the teachings with good deeds. The garland of pure fame spreads in all ten directions, adorning the heads of beings like the top of a victory banner, and bestowing the good fruit with the glory of higher realms. Requested by the great ruler of the earth, and urged by many holy beings such as the great holder of the teachings, Konchok Tsultrim, etc., this was written. This profound meaning is very difficult to fathom, and I am of weak intellect and lack diligence. Therefore, if there is any fault in this, I sincerely confess it. May the virtue accumulated here, as pure as a crystal kunda, enable all those bound by the strong bonds of clinging to extremes to easily attain the view free from extremes. May the teachings of the Buddha, the only eye of view, which comes from Nagarjuna, the best of speakers, with immeasurable understanding of dependent origination, hold the essence of the teachings for a long time. May I also, in all lifetimes, be taken care of by Manjushri, the treasure of wisdom, the venerable one, and may I not abandon and hold the sacred Dharma in general, and especially the words of dependent origination, even for the sake of my life. Thus, this commentary on the "Fundamental Verses on the Middle Way, Called Wisdom," called "The Ocean of Reasoning," was written by the greatly learned monk of East Tsongkhapa, Lobsang Drakpa, a yogi of the great Madhyamaka free from extremes, who takes the dust of the feet of many holy beings such as the venerable and holy Kumaramati, who possess rare wisdom and compassion, as the crown of his head, and who are the foremost of those who hold the banner of the indestructible teachings. The scribe was the diligent in discipline, Sonam Lodro. May this also enable the precious teachings to flourish in all directions. Svasti. Gyal Pema Tsha.
