Because it is free from aging and death. If a sentient being is born and free from death, it must be permanent, therefore it will become an unconditioned dharma. Buddhagupta says that if birth has no aging and death, then the basis for later aging and death will disappear, and even if later encountered with aging and death, they will not have any effect on birth, because without aging and death, it will exist by its own nature. If it is thought that birth is earlier, then Devadatta, without dying in other lives, will also be born here first, therefore samsara will have a beginning, and the fault of having no cause will be committed. Furthermore, it is unreasonable to remember previous births by saying that I appeared in the past, and there will be a new birth of sentient beings who did not appear before but are born later. If it is said, what is the meaning of Devadatta being born here without dying in the previous birth? If it means that Devadatta born here did not die in the previous birth, then, for example, a person who transmigrated from the heavenly realm to be born as a human in this life, that person is born here even though he did not die in the previous birth. Just as samsara does not need to have a beginning, it is the same for Devadatta born in this life. If it is thought that the person born as a human in this life has already died in the previous life, it is extremely unreasonable, because he did not exist in the previous life, and the one who died in the previous life was not the death of a god. If the person born in this life is the same one who died before, then the one who died here will be born later, therefore whichever realm dies, one must be born in that realm. If it is said that if one sentient being, Devadatta, did not die in the previous life, and one sentient being is born here, then there will be a beginning, it is also unreasonable. Because this is the occasion to prevent the earlier birth of the two, birth and death, with one Devadatta as the object, not the occasion to discern which of the two, birth and death, is earlier for each individual sentient being without taking one sentient being as the object. If it is said that here it is not discerning which of the birth and death of two different sentient being streams is earlier, but of one sentient being stream. To this, the opponent also thinks that the birth when Devadatta of this life first takes rebirth in the place of birth, and the death when abandoning the similar aggregates of that, the two are that birth is earlier and death is later.

Although some argue that there is no definite order of before and after in the birth and death of a single continuum, they do not consider the giver of this life and his individual self as separate in terms of their inherently established nature, but rather consider them to be of one essence. If this is the case, since they become one, the giver of this life cannot distinguish between birth and death, and between the order of before and after of birth and aging and death, which are of the same continuum as him. Therefore, before the birth of the same continuum, there must have been a death of the same continuum before the giver of this life was born. If this is the case, the cycle of the giver of sight has a beginning, and sentient beings of the same continuum arise anew from nothing. Then, the statement that the giver of sight existed in past lives is unreasonable, and there is such a fault. Therefore, it is also not the case that the sentient being born here was born here without dying in the previous life, and it is also not the case that the death in the previous life and the birth here refer to the separate continuums of sentient beings, so there is no fault. If the giver of this life remembers that he was born here and there in previous lives, even if he is allowed to have such a memory, it is not permissible to admit it as he remembers it. If he admits it, then the giver of this life also exists in previous lives, and he will become permanent. If you think so, this is an argument made without understanding the way of remembering. For example, in the course of an argument, if one previously admitted that a sound was permanent, but later forgot the previous admission and admitted that it was impermanent, when the opponent points out the contradiction, he will remember it, and at that time he will think, "I previously admitted that it was permanent," but he will not think that this "I" who exists at the later time previously admitted permanence. For this reason, it is possible to point out the contradiction, but if it is not so, it is not possible to point out the contradiction, because the one who previously admitted permanence did not admit impermanence later. Similarly, when the giver of this life remembers the previous life, he thinks, "I was born there and there before," but he does not think, "I was born there and there before," especially because of the time of this life. Therefore, the individual self that the giver of this life focuses on and gives rise to the thought of "I" is the previous life...
