And the nature that comes here from before, the passing of birth and death from one to another, who is it that revolves in samsara? The Teacher also said that the cycle of birth, aging, and death has no beginning and no end. Sentient beings, endowed with the obscuration of ignorance, possessing the universal connection of craving, bound by the continuous stream of craving, the previous limit of those who revolve and wander is not visible. Thus, samsara is explained through the continuous process of birth and death. If that is the case, then there is also a samsaric being, and that is also the self. These distinctions are twofold. Refuting that samsara exists by its own nature. Applying this reasoning to others as well. The first part is twofold. Refuting that samsara has parts of beginning, middle, and end. Refuting that birth and death have prior and subsequent times, and simultaneity. The first is: If samsara exists by its own nature, then like a pot and so on, it should also have a before and after. However, that samsara has no prior and subsequent limits, because it has been said that the cycle of birth and aging has no beginning and no end. The tirthika teachers, such as the Completer, when asked by the Thuba whether this samsara has a prior visible or invisible limit, if they say it is visible, then they refute the assertion that samsara has no creator and arises without cause. If they say it is invisible, then they admit ignorance, thereby refuting their own claim to omniscience. After discussion, when they asked, "Hey, Gautama, is the prior limit of samsara visible?" the great Thuba replied that the prior limit is not visible. Therefore, because it has been said that samsara has no beginning and no end, it is clearly stated that samsara does not exist by its own nature. Therefore, because the prior and subsequent limits cannot be determined, samsara does not exist by its own nature, like the revolving firebrand wheel. If it is said that stating that samsara has no beginning and end merely indicates that there is no initial boundary of "beginning from here" and no final boundary of "not arising from here." Since it has been said that these two do not exist, how can it be proven that samsara does not exist by its own nature? Here, stating that samsara has no beginning and end is not just what you say, but it is also said that there are no prior and subsequent parts, which refers to non-existence in the ultimate sense.

It is so, as Buddhapalita said, "In terms of ultimate truth, it has no beginning and no end." Therefore, the statement in the Clear Words does not contradict what was said before. If someone asks, "Then, are the beginning and end manifest?" and the answer is, "They are not manifest," if this is in conventional truth, then how can this be an argument for the selflessness of samsara? This is because in the Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning it says, "If the samsara of a monk whose afflictions are exhausted completely ceases, then why do the Buddhas not explain the cause of that (cessation)?" Just as if the samsara of aggregates that are established by their own nature and are exhausted has an end, then there is no reason not to explain the initial cause, so this is similar to the reasoning that explains that there is a cause. If the Teacher prohibits the beginning and end of samsara, then (someone might say:) "Monks, therefore you should strive diligently to make samsara cease." If you teach in this way, then it contradicts the statement that there is ultimately cessation. This is not contradictory, because as the previously quoted sutra says, by distinguishing with "sentient beings who are endowed with ignorance," etc., it is only the samsara of those sentient beings that has no end, but for those who have completely abandoned all afflictions, there is an end of exhaustion. If someone thinks, is it not contradictory that things that are separated from the beginning have an end? It is not contradictory, as the Hundred Verses says, "Just as a seed sees an end, but it does not have a beginning, similarly, because the cause is not complete, birth will not occur." Just as a seed has no beginning, but has an end after being burned by fire, similarly, for birth, although there is no beginning, after the afflictions are exhausted, because the cause is not complete, the end of the exhaustion of birth due to afflictions later exists. Here, if one thinks about the suchness of things, then the beginning and end are both non-existent, and are the same; but in conventional truth, the existence and non-existence of the beginning and end are different. If someone thinks that although samsara does not have a beginning and end that are established by their own nature, the middle is existent by its own nature, because it is not prohibited. Then, for which samsara does the beginning and end not exist by their own nature, how can the middle of that samsara be established by its own nature? It will not be. Therefore, samsara is like the sky, because it is separated from the existence of the beginning, end, and middle by its own nature, so it is merely a name, like a rotating firebrand wheel, samsara, and so on.
