The receiver and the self who receives, not being separate but of the same nature, and the two being of different natures. Similarly, objects such as vases, the cause by which something is made into a vase, such as grinding, and the vase itself, the thought that they are the same or different, all of these. The meaning of the teaching, that dependent arising is the most profound, free from permanence and annihilation, is the suchness of that which is designated dependently, and the Protector Nagarjuna greatly admired this. He said that until one finds such an explanation of the Great Self's scriptures, one will not find the suchness of the Sage's teaching. Therefore, the meaning of the suchness of all the scriptures should be understood as determined by this treatise. Secondly, the body of the yogi who, through the analogy of fire and firewood, understands the suchness of all phenomena, will not be burned by the fire of the outer end of time or the fire of the inner three poisons, as it is said in the Samadhiraja Sutra: "Even if burned for hundreds of thousands of eons, the sky has never been burned before. Knowing that all phenomena are like the sky, therefore one will not be burned in the fire. If all the Buddha lands are burned, may all this burning be pacified. Remaining in samadhi and making this aspiration, even if the earth is destroyed, there will be no change in that." Thus it is said. In the praise, from among the dependent arising that is said to be free from the eight extremes, this treatise mainly refutes the extremes of one and different, which can also be established by profound scriptural authority. And, in order to show that all the scriptures that are thus explained will be explained by this treatise, a brief mention is made of the aspects that accord with the definitive meaning sutras, as it is said in the sutra: "Just as the rubbing stick and the rubbing board, and the effort of the hand, these three come together, from these causes fire will arise, and having arisen, having done its work, it quickly ceases. Then the wise seek, from where did this come or where did it go? Searching in all directions and corners, one cannot find the coming and going of this. The aggregates and the sense bases and elements, are empty within and empty without, all are devoid of self and without a place, phenomena.

whose nature is the very essence of space. The nature of Dharma is just like these. Having seen the lighting of a lamp, you realized it. Just as you yourself realized it, may gods and humans alike realize it. Perverted, untrue, examined. Desire and hatred torment beings. From the clouds of compassion, a rain of coolness and peace descends. Guiding the stream of nectar, pour it forth abundantly. Thus it was said. Among these, the first two verses use fire as an example to illustrate that if one examines fire, one cannot find even a little bit, and that it arises dependent on causes and conditions and performs its function. Then, three verses explain that both the self and the phenomena of "mine" are empty of inherent existence, and combine these two examples. Then, one verse shows the example by emptiness. Then, two verses show that meaning, that is, what was previously realized, and then two verses explain that it is necessary to show it to others in that way, and then two verses explain the reason why it is necessary to show it in that way, and then these two verses explain the way of raining down the Dharma. Third, like this, using fire and firewood to symbolize the self and "mine," as well as cause and effect, parts and wholes, etc., when distinguishing between one and different, thinking whether these are established on things that exist by their own nature, or whether they are established on things that exist under the power of convention? If one examines with the reasoning spoken of earlier, if it is like the former, then one will realize that there is no place to establish the terms "burning" and "what is burned," etc., thereby preventing the clinging to them as true. If it is like the latter, then all those terms are very reasonable, thereby strengthening the certainty of dependent arising. Called "Examining Fire and Wood," is the nature of sixteen verses, the explanation of the tenth chapter. Second, to refute the proofs that the person exists by nature, there are two: refuting the proof that there is the activity of birth and death; refuting the proof that there is suffering that depends. The first has three: explaining the tenets of the treatise; combining with the definitive meaning scriptures; summarizing the meaning and indicating the name. First: Here it is said, the self exists by its own nature, because there is samsara. If there is no self, then in the five realms of samsara, from this life to the next
