Since it is not established, the co-emergent self-nature is not seen to exist; if each self-nature is established, then the self and the near-taking would become mutually independent, so it is also unreasonable for each to be established. There is also no seeing and so on before, and the self after, because without an agent, the action cannot be established. At the time of such non-existence, the thoughts that "the self exists by its own nature" will be eliminated; because seeing and so on make it clear, the thoughts that "that person does not exist" will also be eliminated. Second, it has been established that the person and the near-taker do not exist by their own nature, and this has been proven by the profound teachings, and in order to show that all the scriptures that say so will be discussed in this treatise, so it is combined with the definitive meaning scriptures: it should be understood as in the discussion of the arising analysis combined with the teachings. Third, for "this person is the taker of that body" and "these dharmas are what this person takes", if one clings to the grasping that is not established by name, but exists as if grasping self-nature, then after generating the certainty that there is no name for what is taken and the taker, one should think about the reason why the dependent arising, which is only a nominal designation, is extremely reasonable for the two. The explanation of the ninth chapter, which is called "Examining What Exists Before", which has twelve verses. Second, there are two refutations of the proposition that a person exists by nature: refuting the example of the proposition; refuting the reason for the proposition. The first has three parts: explaining the treatise; combining it with the definitive meaning scriptures; summarizing the meaning and stating the name. First: Here it is said that the near-taking and the near-taker are mutually dependent, so they are not established by their own nature, which is unreasonable, because self-nature is seen to be established in things that have dependence. Thus, although fire arises depending on firewood, it is because the nature of heat and the effect of burning are seen; although it becomes firewood depending on fire, it is because it is the nature of the four great elements that can be burned. Therefore, fire

I, like firewood, approach, and both the approacher and the approached are inherently established. To refute this, there are three points: refuting that fire and firewood inherently exist; applying this reasoning to other things as well; and criticizing the view that holds the meaning of what is refuted as real. The first point has three parts: refuting with reasoning not previously explained; refuting with reasoning previously explained; and summarizing the above two. The first point has two parts: refuting self-nature as one; and refuting self-nature as different. The first point is: if fire and wood both inherently exist, then they must be either inherently one or different. Because if one of the two, one and different, is determined, then the other must be completely eliminated, because it is the opposite of the three modes. Wood and so on are the objects to be burned, and the burner is fire. If the wood and the fire are inherently one, then the agent and the action will become one. Just as the potter and the pot, or the object to be cut and the cutter, are never seen or admitted to be one, so it is unreasonable. The ashes, from the opposite point of view, refute the inherent oneness of fire and wood with the reason of being the agent and the action. The second point has two parts: refuting the thesis of different self-nature; and refuting the proof of different self-nature. The first point has two parts: if self-nature is different, then it does not depend on wood; and if self-nature is different, then it will not meet with wood. The first point has two parts: actual refutation; and eliminating uncertainty. The first point has two parts: arising without wood; and becoming constantly burning, etc. The first point is: if fire is inherently different from wood, then fire will arise without depending on firewood, just as cloth, which is different from a pot, is seen to be independent of the pot. This is because if self-nature is different, then it should not depend, and if it does not depend, then it should be independent. Just as cloth without a pot can be seen, but fire without firewood cannot be seen, this difference is unreasonable. Refuting other-arising, if it arises from an independent other, then for all the same others, there will be no difference between arising and not arising. Therefore, this reasoning is not without difference. The second point is: Furthermore, fire from firewood is inherently
