If it is said that it is not contradictory not to think that one time exists before all things, just as time exists before all remaining things. Answer: Because this is the occasion to prevent the receiver and the received things from being established by their own nature, there is no fault. Through this reason, it should not exist before each one either. Thus, if a person exists before each of seeing and so on, then it is necessary that the seer is the hearer, and the feeler is also him. This is not reasonable, because the hearer who is separated from the act of seeing is also the seer, and the seer who is separated from the act of hearing is also the hearer. Because for each action, the author is different, the seer himself is also the hearer, which is not reasonable. Although it should be admitted that one Devadatta exists before ten people in sequence is a nominal designation, if it is thought that the Devadatta who sits before the first person also sits before the second person, then the seer when viewing the form earlier, the hearer when hearing the sound later must also be admitted to be him. Although it must be admitted in this way, since the other party has not admitted it in this way, how is it reasonable to think of this refutation? Generally speaking, for the Svatantrika, in the Pramāṇavārttika it says: "That whose own nature is indestructible, the wise call that permanent, therefore abandon this shame, that is said to be permanent." Thus, just as the person who existed before the eye earlier, later also thinks that the part of him existing before the ear sense has not perished. Through such an admission, that fault can also be stated, but here, if the person is established by his own nature, then the seer and the hearer do not go beyond being one or other by their own nature. Because otherness is prevented below, if it is one, then what existed before one dharma earlier must also exist before the second dharma later. For those who think that they exist before each one in sequence, the fault of saying that the seer is that one is also made. If it is thought that the seer is also the hearer, it is also seen that the previously mentioned fault will arise, if it is thought that the seer, the hearer, and the feeler, etc., are other by their own nature, then when there is a seer, there will also be a hearer at the same time, if that is the case

Because it is not desired in this way, it is not inherently existent. Furthermore, if it is thought to be as before, then one person would also have many 'I's, because the viewer and so on are inherently different. The third case is: if the 'I' exists before all seeing and so on, but there would be no fault of having no reason to establish it as 'I', because in the stage of name and form before seeing and so on, it is said in the sutras, 'Due to the cause of name and form, the six sense bases arise,' so there would be the cause of seeing and hearing etc. arising, which is the four great elements. Therefore, if it is said that before seeing and so on, there exists an 'I' that possesses the clinging to the four great elements, then, for the four great elements from which seeing and hearing etc. and feelings etc. arise, that 'I' is also not inherently existent. If that 'I' were inherently existent, then since it is later than and simultaneous with the four great elements, clinging to the four great elements would be unreasonable, so it would become existent before the four great elements. If so, then the fault of having no reason to establish it as 'I' etc. would arise as previously stated, so the fault is not repeated here. The second part is divided into two points: the way of establishing the 'I', and the refutation of the objections to it. The first point is: if the self-existent person is refuted in this way, then wouldn't the statement of the person who sees and hears etc. become unreasonable? Because the person who does seeing and hearing etc. cannot be denied by anyone, so it is not possible to completely deny it. To this, other schools will definitely admit that there are persons who see and hear etc., but because they think that being the same entity as the aggregates is unreasonable, they think that there is an 'I' of a person who is a different entity from the aggregates. Other schools of our own think that it is necessary to establish a person who accumulates karma etc., and because they see the harm in the existence of an 'I' that is a different entity from the aggregates, they say that the collection of aggregates and the alaya consciousness that abandons the body and takes rebirth is itself the 'I' or the person. Our own school is that, for the object of the co-emergent self-grasping, it is necessary to establish it as I, self, and person, but for animals and so on who do not think that there is a person who is nominally established by conceptual imputation like the outsiders, there is also I and I.
