If one thinks that the person who abides in the aggregates takes up views and so on, then there is another fault as well. If that is the case, then just as Devadatta, before being related to wealth, abides separately from wealth and then accumulates other wealth, for the taker as well, that person does not exist, but rather, different from that, those views and so on will undoubtedly exist elsewhere. It is not possible to think that way, because this person is the close taker of these eyes and so on, so what is taken closely by views and so on, by what nature of the taker is it made clear, manifest, and known, and these eyes and so on are the close object to be taken by this person. By what nature of the taker does it make clear what is taken closely by views and so on? At that time, without relying on what is to be taken, how can there be a taker? There is not. Without relying on the taker, how can there be something to be taken? There is not. Therefore, these two are established in mutual reliance. When there is no taker, and views and so on are admitted elsewhere, then because there is no basis for the eyes and so on, there are no views and so on. This is also the reason why, as previously stated, if the nature is different, it is not permissible to rely on it. Buddhapalita said that in response to the question of what it is that is to be designated, even without views and so on, it is completely established by itself. When the meaning of the two lines that say views and so on is spoken, then there is no doubt that even without that person, views and so on are completely established by themselves. If that is the case, what is the fault? In response to the question, the two lines that say what is it show that the two clarify each other, and for that reason, the two explain the latter two lines by saying that if one is missing, the other is missing. Those indicate that there is no cause for designating the taker and no basis for the object to be taken, so it is said that the taker is different from views and so on, and that the existence of the taker by nature is not established. The second part has two: stating the former position and refuting it. The first is: if it is admitted that the person exists before all views and so on, then there will be those faults, but before all views and so on, the taker does not exist.

It exists before each one. Therefore, among the objects to be taken, such as views, when the person is made manifest by the sense of sight, another sense makes it manifest at another time, but not at that time. When bound by sight, one is not bound by hearing, so it also exists before what is to be taken. Moreover, there is no fault of being established as a person without a cause, they say. This has already said that it exists before what is to be taken, but it has not said that it exists before all views, etc. There is no fault of being established as a person without a cause, because it is not admitted that it exists before everything, they think. Now, it is preventing the person who takes and his eyes, etc., from being considered as what should be taken. The person of the previous life taking the body of the next life is not the meaning of the taker and what should be taken in this case. So, what does it mean that a person takes views, etc.? If that person loses the function of seeing form, and the eye sense disappears, then he has taken it. At that time, he is considered to exist simultaneously with the sense of sight, and before the sense of hearing, etc., he should also know others. Second, if the self does not exist before all views, etc., then how can the self exist before each view, etc.? It is unreasonable. For example, if a forest does not exist before all trees, then it does not exist before each one. If all the sand does not have the ability to extract sesame oil, then neither does each one. Furthermore, if it is said to exist before each one, then it becomes admitting that it also exists before everything, because there is no everything except for each one. This is like speaking to each person present there, and when there is no remainder, it is like speaking to everyone present there. If that person exists before each one from views, etc., without any remainder, then eventually it can be established that it exists before all views, etc. If it exists before everything counted one by one in chronological order, then existing before the view
