Because it is devoid of the act of abiding. That which is abiding also does not abide, because other than the former two, that which is abiding is not existent by its own nature. And if that which is abiding abides, then the act of abiding would become two, and therefore the abider would also become two. Furthermore, the birth that exists by its own nature has already been refuted, and since that does not exist, how could abiding become existent by its own nature for anything that is not born by its own nature? It will not. The second point is: Furthermore, if we examine this abiding, it does not go beyond two possibilities, and that is, for a thing that is in the process of ceasing, the very fact that it is manifestly directed towards ceasing, it is not reasonable for abiding to exist by its own nature, because the acts of abiding and ceasing are incompatible. If you think that it is not in the process of ceasing at the time of abiding, then anything that is not in the process of ceasing should not be a thing, so how could abiding become existent by its own nature for it? Furthermore, all things are of a nature that they are aging at all times, that is, changing, and dying, that is, decaying, without letting go for even a moment, so for which things would abiding become existent by its own nature? What thing exists that abides without aging and dying? There is none. Here, whether it is permanent or momentary, abiding for a second time from the time of its own establishment does not exist even in name. Therefore, the moment that is spoken of as the characteristic of impermanence is that which does not remain for a second time from the time of its own establishment, and it is not the meaning of momentariness that it only remains for a short while. Therefore, in order for a year to be complete, twelve months must be complete, and after that, that year will not abide, so all permanence is also a moment that does not remain for a second time from the time of its own establishment. For example, although the impermanence distinguished by sound does not follow the vase, impermanence follows both sound and vase in the same way. Although the vase that exists in the former time does not exist in the later time, it is not contradictory that the vase exists in both the former and later times. Therefore, such abiding, and all things abiding in their own time, and abiding like not abiding on the ground, exist in name, so existence by its own nature should be refuted. If abiding is existent by its own nature, then it must abide as it was before at all times, so it is contradictory to the acts of aging and decaying, but it is not contradictory to merely abiding. The third point is:

Furthermore, if abiding exists by its own nature, then it does not go beyond the two, the abider and the abode, and also the abider abides, it is unreasonable for it to be abided by others. Just as it has been shown that birth is not caused by others, so too should this be applied here. If another abider, then its abiding will be without end. That is what it says. It is also unreasonable for the abider to abide, to abide by itself, and it should be applied as birth is not self-caused, because this abiding is non-abiding, how can its own nature abide? If the abider abides, then what is there to abide when abiding? That is what it says. Also in the Samadhiraja Sutra it says: These dharmas are non-abiding, these do not have an abode, although expressed by the term of non-abiding abiding, it is not obtained by its own nature. The protector of the world did not teach abiding and birth, therefore, recognizing such a protector of the world, thereby understand samadhi. Thus, recognize that the Victorious One taught that abiding and birth do not exist in their own nature, thereby understand samadhi. Also in the Compendium it says: Whatever does not abide in form, does not abide in feeling, whatever does not abide in perception, does not abide in formation, does not abide in consciousness, whatever does not abide, that is the abiding of the dharma nature, this is the supreme conduct of prajnaparamita. Constant and impermanent, pleasure and suffering, suffering and non-suffering, self and non-self, thusness and suchness emptiness, obtaining fruition and arhats do not abide on the ground, the ground of the solitary realizer and the ground of the Thus Gone One also do not abide. Just as the guide does not abide in the unconditioned realm, likewise it does not abide in the conditioned, it acts in non-abiding. Thus, the Bodhisattva abides in non-abiding in the abode, non-abiding is the abode, this is the abode spoken by the Victorious One. Thus it is said. The third has three: The way to prevent by examining cessation, the reason why the fault does not match itself, and refuting the view that destruction is without cause. The first is: If birth and abiding are self-existent, because the dharma of acting together with them, destruction, exists. If you say so, there are five refutations to this: refute by examining the three times, refute by examining whether it is abiding or not, refute by examining whether the occasion of abiding is self or other, refute by examining whether the thing exists or not, and from whether there is another destroyer
