If it relies on two separate bases, then it is inconsistent with being established by its own nature. If the two, as a verb and as an agent, have the same meaning, then one of them will become meaningless. If it is thought that both have meaning, then there will be two acts of birth, so the sprout as the agent will also become two. This treatise was composed by two teachers and is used to prevent the production of others from oneself, while the previous example of the lamp prevented the meaning of producing both oneself and others, but it cannot be used for common prevention. Second, if only what is being produced is birth, then what is born and what is not born are not. It is also not the case that there is no being produced other than what is born and what is not born, because what has the act of birth is called being produced, and there is also birth. If that is the case, since being produced is established by relying on birth, only what is being produced produces, and it is also produced by birth, then, when birth exists, that is, relying on the act of birth, being produced is established as existing by its own nature, and this being produced is also arising, that is, birth, if it is said like that, then, it must be able to be determined in the state of being produced that this sprout etc. is the sprout etc. that is being produced by relying on the birth of this sprout etc., but this is impossible, because at that time they have not yet been born, so their characteristics cannot be grasped. Therefore, since there are no sprouts etc. being produced in that state, their act of birth is also non-existent by its own nature at that time. Then, how can it be said that relying on the act of birth, sprouts etc. exist by their own nature as being produced? It cannot be said. The second part is divided into two points: one is refuting the debate on the birth of the three times, and the other is refuting the debate on the birth of what is being produced. The first point is: you people of your own sect, under the guise of explaining the Buddhist scriptures, are only good at refuting others, and you are very afraid that the true meaning of the Buddha's teaching, dependent origination, will be destroyed, because the Tathagata, by saying "this exists, therefore that arises" etc., eliminated the saying that self-nature and Ishvara etc. are the agents, thereby showing the reality of things.

When you refute it with reasons such as 'already born, not born, being born,' and 'not produced in any way,' it is equivalent to destroying the mother of all Buddhas—dependent origination. Therefore, (the opponent) says, 'Arguing with you, who say it does not exist, is enough for now.' This (opponent) is arguing because he understands that the previously stated reasons obstruct the cause and effect of establishing the producer and the produced on dependent origination. It should be remembered that I am not destroying the mother of all Buddhas—dependent origination, but it is you who do not believe in profound dependent origination and misunderstand its meaning, and thus slander us. When the Teacher said, 'This arising, that arises,' he clearly showed that all phenomena are without inherent existence. Whatever arises dependently is by its very nature peaceful, separated, and empty. If things existed by their own nature, they would have to hold their own unchanging nature by their own essence, and since they do not depend on anything else, there would be no arising. Therefore, if you admit that things exist by their own nature, how could there be dependent origination? Therefore, only when you admit inherent existence do you in every way harm the dependent origination of things. Therefore, it will also harm the seeing of Dharma and Buddha, because the scriptures say, 'Whoever sees dependent origination sees the Dharma. Whoever sees the Dharma sees the Buddha.' We show that relying on the cause called 'seed,' the effect called 'sprout' arises, and that both of these are also dependently originated, peaceful, and devoid of inherent existence. In this way, the mother of all Buddhas—dependent origination—will be clearly elucidated in every way. Whatever is dependently originated is by its very nature peaceful, and therefore, for dependent origination, whether it is being born or born, its existence by its very nature is also only peaceful. The commentator answers in this way in the Clear Words, and the reasoning that refutes through analysis not only does not harm the principle of cause and effect of dependent origination in the slightest, but also shows that principle very clearly, so it should be known that this is stabilizing the definitive understanding of dependent origination.
