That which exists is Madhyamaka. Or, it is called Madhyamaka because it is referred to by the name "ka," and Lekden said it is the Madhyamaka school. Based on the root of the word Madhyamaka in Sanskrit, the Madhyamaka treatise or the Madhyamaka school is called Madhyamaka. If the middle that abandons the two extremes is explained as Madhyamaka, then as it is said in the Samadhiraja Sutra: 'Existence and non-existence, both of these are extremes. Purity and impurity, this is also an extreme. Therefore, having completely abandoned both extremes, the wise will not even abide in the middle.' How should this be understood? This is like those who speak of entities, who block the limited extremes and then grasp the true middle that is separate from them, and show that they do not abide in it, so it is not showing that the middle that has abandoned all extremes such as existence and non-existence is non-existent. In the Explanation of Reasoning, it says: 'An extreme is exhaustion and the end, nearness and direction and baseness.' As it is said, the meaning of the word extreme has many applications, but the extreme of being free from extremes is the Madhyamaka appearance. If the Madhyamaka has any object of the nature of the mind's own essence, then, at that time, because it has it, how can it become an extreme to be obviously attached to whether it is permanent or impermanent? It is not reasonable to say that following the reality of things as they are and properly attending to them is a place of downfall. As it is said. That is, the object that exists as it is grasped is not an extreme here, and the mind is also properly attending, so it is not grasping at an extreme. Therefore, the extreme here is a place of downfall, just as in the world a cliff is called an extreme, and falling from it is called falling into an extreme. For this, true existence is not possible even in name, because true non-existence exists in name, so saying that it does not exist in ultimate reality is not grasping at the extreme of non-existence, nor is it denying that it is not so, although it is not refuting the extreme of non-existence, but if one clings to the negation that has been refuted as truly existing, then one will fall into the extreme of non-existence, so refuting it is also refuting the extreme of non-existence. Since no valid cognizer can harm the fact that phenomena such as cause and effect exist nominally, the object and subject that grasp these as not existing or non-existent are the extreme of non-existence and grasping at that extreme, for the Buddha...

Things like 'non-existence' are not nihilistic views or clinging to them. This is the nihilism of defamation, while the former is the nihilism of exaggeration. Therefore, objects and subjects that hold as truly existent or existent by their own characteristics, other than the previously mentioned prohibitions, are eternalism and clinging to it. Things like 'Buddha has wisdom and compassion' are not eternalism or clinging to it. In some instances in the scriptures, everything that exists in ultimate truth is also described as eternalism. Therefore, one should understand that falling into extremes of existence and non-existence, which is named as falling into extremes because clinging to it destroys the clinger, is like that. If one clings to just the words 'existence and non-existence' and abandons them, hoping for the saying 'neither existent nor non-existent,' and diligently tries to change 'without form, without sound,' etc., it is just a waste of effort. The root is like the foundation of all Madhyamaka treatises, not just leaning to one side. 'Verse' means arranged in stanzas, not the well-known chapters. There are four hundred and forty-nine verses here, and twenty-seven chapters. The second part has three sections: praising the teacher by saying that dependent arising is free from extremes; explaining how dependent arising is free from the eight extremes; and paying homage while remembering the kindness of the teacher in this way. The first part has two sections: the general meaning and the meaning of the limbs. The first part has three sections: the meaning of this statement has the subject matter of the treatise, etc.; the basis of distinction has eight characteristics; and refuting the objections of others to this. The first part is: The teacher, in order to show the greatness by showing the subject matter of all the treatises that the teacher will explain without reversing it, therefore, the teacher considers paying homage to the teacher who is inseparable from the nature of dependent arising as the cause of composing the treatise, so he said 'By what,' etc. Among them, what is distinguished by eight characteristics such as the non-cessation of dependent arising is the subject matter of the Root Wisdom. Nirvana, which is the pacification of all elaborations and has the nature of pacification, is its necessity. From the praise of the Clear Words
