For all who enter the small gate, giving them the eyes to see the lifeblood of the path is an exceedingly great kindness. Among these, the most supreme is the Root Wisdom, for it shows limitless different doors of reasoning, thereby causing a deep certainty in the profound meaning. Fourth, having faith in such a profound Dharma is greatly praised, as it says in the Collected Sutras: Having faith in the profound Dharma accumulates all merit for a long time, and until Buddhahood is attained, all worldly and transworldly perfections will be accomplished. As it says in the Sutra Given by the Boy Jewel: Manjushri, a Bodhisattva without skillful means, practicing the six perfections for hundreds of thousands of eons, is less than someone who listens to this Dharma with doubt, for this person generates more merit than the former, let alone listening without doubt? What need to mention writing, upholding, reciting, and widely proclaiming it to others? The Diamond Sutra also says: The Blessed One said to Subhuti: What do you think? If there were as many sands in the Ganges River, and as many Ganges Rivers as there are sands, would the sands in all those Ganges Rivers be many? Subhuti said: Very many, Blessed One. The Ganges Rivers themselves are countless, let alone their sands. The Blessed One said to Subhuti: I now truly tell you, if there are good men and good women who fill as many worlds as there are sands in those Ganges Rivers with the seven precious jewels and offer them to the Tathagata, would the merit gained by those men and women be great? Subhuti said: Very great, Blessed One. The Blessed One said: If good men and good women, from this sutra, even uphold a four-line verse and explain it to others, their merit would be far greater than the former merit. Furthermore, as it says in the Tathagatagarbha Sutra, after enumerating the ten great non-virtuous deeds, it says that those who are associated with these non-virtuous deeds,

Those sentient beings who enter the Dharma with faith and who have faith and devotion in the purity of all Dharmas from the very beginning will not go to the lower realms. It is said in the chapter on Subduing Mara: "Any Bhikshu who understands all Dharmas to be extremely tamed and also knows that the beginning and end of faults are naturally empty, eliminates the regret of having committed faults, and does not hold on to them firmly, can suppress even the five heinous crimes. What need is there to mention minor transgressions of rituals and discipline?" It is said in the Sutra of Ajatashatru: "If one who commits the five heinous crimes hears this sacred Dharma, enters into it, and has faith, I will not say that his karma is a karmic obscuration." These are all as cited by the teacher. Fifthly, when listening to the profound words of emptiness, some people do not have faith and abandon it, and therefore fall into the lower realms. Others, although they have faith, hold on to it perversely, thinking that the meaning of emptiness is nothing at all, and thus slander it. Therefore, the speaker should clearly distinguish the differences in faith before explaining it. How do we know this from what signs? It is said in the Entering the Middle Way: "Even in the state of an ordinary person, after hearing about emptiness, great joy arises again and again in the mind. Tears from great joy moisten the eyes, and the hairs of the body stand on end. For such a person, there is the seed of the wisdom of the complete Buddha. Such a person is a vessel for revealing what is near. The truth of ultimate meaning should be taught to him. For such a person, the qualities that follow will arise." Here, three signs are explained. Not only are the first two faults absent, but the qualities of the listener also arise. Like this, he rejoices in hearing the view of emptiness as if he had found a treasure, and contemplates how to prevent this view from deteriorating in other lifetimes. Thinking, "If I fall into the lower realms due to the deterioration of my discipline, the view of emptiness will be interrupted," he correctly takes the vows of discipline and purifies them completely after taking them. Even if he is born in a good rebirth through discipline, if he becomes poor, he will be distracted by seeking food, clothing, and so on, and will not be able to continuously listen to emptiness. Therefore, he gives alms. Because the view of emptiness is embraced by great compassion, he can attain Buddhahood. If he is separated from it, he cannot attain Buddhahood. Therefore, he becomes accustomed to meditating on compassion.
