This is an explanation of emptiness. First, if because it is the nature of appearance, a lamp causes the two objects of nature to appear, then because it is the nature of obscuration, there is no doubt that darkness will also obscure both its own and others' objects. If darkness obscures itself, then that darkness itself will not be seen, like a vase. Thus, darkness obscuring itself and a lamp making itself clear do not exist in either of the two truths. Darkness obscuring others and a lamp making others clear exist nominally, but not ultimately. Second, therefore, in the Upaliparipṛcchā-sūtra, it says, "For this very joyful teaching, abandoning the marks of a householder and becoming a renunciate, one will become the most excellent with fruit." The compassionate one also taught this. Having abandoned the marks of a householder and become a renunciate, even if all the fruits are obtained, if the nature of the Dharma is measured, there is no fruit, and there is no attainment of fruit. However, the attainment of fruit is attainable. Alas, the best of men, the Victorious One endowed with compassion, has explained the reasoning very well!" They will have great wonder at these things. It is said. By examining the nature, even though there is no fruit to be obtained, no obtainer, and no obtaining of it, the attainment of fruit exists, thinking that this is very wonderful. They say that great reverence will arise for the Victorious One. The attainment of fruit is also the meaning of encounter, so encounter itself is non-existent in its own nature, and here is established the basis for establishing encounter and attainment. In the Ratnakūṭa-sūtra also it says: "For example, in a house, some people, some, after a long time, the lamp is blown out by the wind, they do not think that the darkness has been there for a long time, so it will not leave. If the lamp appears, darkness cannot prevent darkness from disappearing. Relying on the lamp, darkness will disappear. Both are empty and have no arrogance." Thus, both light and darkness are empty in their own nature, and the way in which elimination and being eliminated are appropriate on this basis is illustrated with an example, and then the example is applied to the meaning: "Similarly, relying on the uncontaminated noble wisdom, the accumulation of ignorance and afflictions will disappear. Wisdom and afflictions, even if examined, have never had any intersection. Wisdom and non-wisdom

Not doing non-reasoning thoughts, relying on wisdom, ignorance will disappear. Both are ungraspable, like a flower in the sky. Similarly, both wisdom and ignorance are empty. Thus it is said. Regarding this, using the example of a lamp dispelling darkness, from the perspective of emptiness of inherent nature, is acceptable, but citing the meaning is to understand the method of abandoning what is to be abandoned by the antidote, just as a lamp dispels darkness. Third, if the antidote, wisdom, abandons what is to be abandoned like a lamp dispelling darkness, then how is that method? In the same place, the arising of appearance manifests, and the ceasing of darkness manifests, both simultaneously, therefore the arising of appearance and the ceasing of darkness are also simultaneous. Thus, in that place, when the lamp is present, although there is no darkness to be dispelled, the lamp as the dispeller of darkness is not contradictory, just as in the previous moment, although there is no subsequent moment, the previous moment as the producer of the subsequent moment is not contradictory. Similarly, in the same continuum, the antidote, the stainless wisdom, and what is to be abandoned do not exist simultaneously, as it is said in the scriptures: "They never even associate once." Thus it is said, it has been clarified. Even so, the antidote abandoning what is to be abandoned is not contradictory, which is the meaning of "relying on wisdom, ignorance will disappear." Therefore, the uninterrupted path of the path of seeing and its abandonments, the abandonments of seeing, although they do not exist simultaneously in the same continuum, that path is abandoning that which is to be abandoned, and the uninterrupted path of the path of meditation abandoning its abandonments of meditation is the same. If, when the antidote, the stainless uninterrupted path, arises, if there is no corresponding abandonment, then the saying "relying on wisdom, ignorance will disappear" is not reasonable, because at the time of wisdom, that which is to be abandoned has already disappeared. If it is said thus, here the abandonments and the antidote are compared to appearance and darkness, the directly corresponding antidote, the arising of appearance manifests, and its corresponding abandonment, the ceasing of appearance manifests, both simultaneously, therefore the arising of the antidote and the ceasing of what is to be abandoned are also simultaneous. Even so, at the time of the uninterrupted path, it is not abandoning that which is to be abandoned, but at the time of the path of liberation it is abandoned. Therefore, relying on the antidote, what is to be abandoned will disappear.
