This is to say the meaning of the first (reason) that elucidates the two. Because a lamp dispels darkness, in whatever places there is a lamp, that is, the places illuminated by the lamp's light, there is no darkness there. Therefore, does a lamp illuminate itself and others? It does not. If the lamp's dispelling of darkness by its own nature does not exist, then it should not be said that there is no darkness in the lamp and the place illuminated by it. Because the lamp, in the very act of arising, dispels darkness, the lamp and the place illuminated by it are without darkness. If the lamp did not dispel darkness, then just as in the time when it is not burning, even when it is burning, one would not be able to perceive a vase and so forth. Therefore, if it is said that the lamp has the function of illuminating and dispelling darkness, and that this is done by the lamp in the very act of arising, then, since light and darkness cannot exist in the same place at the same time, the two cannot meet. Therefore, at the time when the lamp is arising and the two, light and darkness, do not exist by their own characteristics, how can it be said that the lamp, in the very act of arising, dispels darkness in any way, which is possessed by its own characteristic? This is not something to be investigated. Even in conventional terms, when people think that a lamp dispels darkness, it is still necessary for the lamp to meet with darkness in the very act of arising. However, at the time when the lamp is arising, the lamp does not exist, so it does not need to meet with darkness. If, as one thinks that the lamp is established by its own characteristic, one thinks that the lamp meets with darkness in the very act of arising, then at that time the lamp must exist, but since it does not exist, the lamp also does not meet in the very act of arising. Therefore, it is not reasonable for the lamp to dispel darkness, this is the reason to be explained. If one thinks that wisdom only destroys ignorance without meeting it, and the eye only sees form without meeting it, and a magnet only attracts iron without meeting it, similarly, the lamp also dispels darkness without meeting it, then, if one says that the lamp dispels darkness by its own characteristic even without meeting darkness, then this lamp, which is here, will dispel the darkness that exists in all the worlds, just as it is near. By this example, one should know that the destruction of ignorance by wisdom and so forth is also the same as what is to be proven. If this is established by its own characteristic, then there is no certainty of what is to be dispelled and what dispels.

If it is possible, then everything can be eliminated, and if everything cannot be eliminated, then the reasoning that not even one can be eliminated. If you want a birth that is established by its own nature, it is the same as projecting it to be born from everything. If even without meeting, because magnets and the like only attract things that exist in a suitable place, then there is no such fault, if you say so. If there is no meeting, then whether or not it exists in a suitable place itself cannot be established, so it is the same as before. If in the world, even without meeting, one can see the difference between eliminating and not eliminating, attracting and not attracting, etc., if you say so. You put in the examination of meeting and not meeting, etc., just like wanting lamps, etc., to illuminate, but the world has not seen it. Because the world does not put in such an examination, but wants lamps to eliminate darkness, eyes to see things, etc. Or even if the world allows it to be seen that way, because the world is not a valid measure for distinguishing reality, it will not harm, so it is said. Those answers prevent wanting lamps to eliminate darkness, eyes to see things, etc., to be able to be examined by reason, and also the people of the world do not want it, so it does not contradict the world's seeing. Moreover, preventing those is preventing establishment in reality, and the world's seeing is not a measure of that, so even if it allows seeing, it will not harm, so it is shown. If lamps eliminate darkness, magnets attract iron, etc., are established in the ultimate sense, then in the case of not meeting, for the same things, there is no difference between eliminating and not eliminating, etc., and generally it is not said that way. In this way, for the terms of worldly people, when acknowledging them in conventional truth, one should not examine them with reason that distinguishes whether they are reasonable, but when examining whether they are established in reality, one must put in the examination of reason, and if one does not do so, one will acknowledge that aspects that contradict reason are established in the ultimate sense. The way of examining is also like the world asking whether you saw so-and-so, whether the magnet attracted that iron, etc. It is not examining how the seen, the seer, etc., exist in meaning, but it is not an examination that does not examine meaning, but it is examining whether phenomena exist in the nature of meaning, etc. The second has three: showing the actual meaning, quoting the knowable of everything said before, the sutra of the knowable.
