If it is the element (of earth), then it does not point out the fault that there must be other characteristics to represent that it is the earth element. The characteristic of arising represents conditioned phenomena, and if it is a conditioned phenomenon, then the reason for saying that there must be other characteristics to represent it is: when hardness represents its own nature as the earth element, it represents it in a way that is not different from its own nature. When arising represents its own nature as conditioned phenomena, it represents it in a way that is a different entity from its own nature. If arising is not a conditioned phenomenon, then it cannot be said how arising would be a characteristic of conditioned phenomena, just like space. The commentary also says that if arising does not want the other three characteristics, then because it is separated from these three characteristics, it will become not a characteristic of conditioned phenomena. It will be said below that this is what the commentary author said, not what the root author said, so it is mentioned incidentally. Buddhapālita explained it in another way. The spoken of arising also represents the two characteristics of abiding and ceasing. If abiding is a conditioned phenomenon, etc., these contents can be omitted. Second, furthermore, if one thinks that arising, etc., are the characteristics of conditioned phenomena, then one examines whether each one is a characteristic or whether the combination is a characteristic. The meaning of this is whether arising, etc., represent each one in sequence or whether they represent them simultaneously. To this, arising and the three included by etc., abiding and ceasing, each one, that is, each one in sequence, It is not possible to represent the characteristics of conditioned phenomena. For example, at the time of arising, if there are no two characteristics of abiding and ceasing, then like space, there is no arising. At the time of abiding, if there are no two characteristics of arising and ceasing, then like a flower in the sky, there is no thing existing. If it abides in the second time from the time of its own establishment, then it will not perish later, and if it perishes later, then one thing will become both permanent and impermanent, which is unreasonable. At the time of ceasing, if there are no two characteristics of arising and abiding, then like a flower in the sky, there is no ceasing. The Vaibhāṣikas believe that the four characteristics of the nature of form, etc., exist simultaneously, but first there is the action of arising, then the action of abiding, then the action of aging, and then the action of ceasing, which proceed in sequence. If this is the case, then it will harm the view that advocates momentariness.

In response to the previous proponents, it is refuted that the Kosa commentary states that our moment is capable of completing all four functions simultaneously. Even though arising and so forth possess their respective characteristics, it is contradictory for their respective functions not to occur simultaneously. If the functions cannot occur, then they also do not exist, and therefore these faults still persist. If one were to speak according to the second view, it would also be unreasonable. How could it be possible for a single entity to have the aggregation of arising, abiding, and ceasing at the same time, that is, for the aggregation to exist with its own nature? This is not possible because such an aggregation is mutually contradictory, like attachment and detachment, or light and darkness. Although in conventional terms, it is not contradictory for these three to exist simultaneously on a single basis, it is contradictory if they exist with their own nature or in ultimate truth. For example, if abiding exists with its own nature, then from the time it is established, it must also continue into the second moment, and therefore the ceasing of destruction in the second moment is unreasonable, and therefore the destruction that is ceasing in its own time also does not exist. Therefore, at the time when the function of abiding exists, the function of destruction is contradictory, like light and darkness. If arising exists with its own nature, then it must arise again, and therefore it is contradictory to have ceasing destruction at the time when one has the function of arising. If one is inclined towards arising, then it is the future, and if one is inclined towards ceasing, then it is the present. This is refuting the view held by the Sautrantikas and others who believe that arising, abiding, and ceasing are established at the same time with their own nature, by taking arising, abiding, and ceasing as the essence of function, considering the newly arising that did not exist before as arising, considering the abiding that is similar to the previous kind as abiding, considering the not continuing into the second moment as ceasing, and considering the later moment as having a different nature from the previous moment as aging. If one acknowledges an agent and says that the functions occur at the same time, then it is easy to understand that such an occurrence is contradictory. This view is also explained in other ways by Buddhapalita. The third part has two aspects: presenting the refutation and refuting the answer that eliminates the faults. The first aspect is: If arising and so forth have other characteristics, or do not have other characteristics, what faults would there be if one were to think that they have other characteristics as previously stated? And what faults would there be if they did not have other characteristics? If arising, abiding, and ceasing and so forth have the characteristic of being conditioned phenomena, and are a different entity from themselves...
