If one cannot correctly perceive and is not attached to this Dharma, then one will not be attached to all three realms, and will quickly attain this samadhi. One will also quickly attain the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. Thus it is said. Third, thus, regarding the three aspects of affliction, such as what is clung to, where one clings, and how one clings, and the three aspects of purification, such as what is believed in, where one believes, and how one believes, if there is an apprehension that they are established by their own nature, then, just as it has been determined by reason that there is no way to speak of these things, it must be determined. Then, the terms for these things must be acknowledged, but since they cannot be established on what is established by its own nature, then only on emptiness of self-nature are the establishments of these things most reasonable, and one should be led to the certainty of dependent arising. Attachment depends on desire, and so forth, one should acknowledge as in the cited translation. The treatise called "Examining Desire and Attachment" is the explanation of the sixth chapter, which is the nature of ten verses. Second, refuting the characteristics of arising, abiding, and ceasing has three parts: explaining the text of the treatise, combining it with definitive meaning scriptures, and summarizing the meaning and indicating the name. The first has two parts: stating the previous position and refuting it. First: Here it is said that the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, which are conditioned phenomena, exist by their own nature because they have the characteristics of conditioned phenomena, such as arising. The Teacher also said, "Monks, these three are the characteristics of conditioned phenomena: conditioned phenomena are manifest in arising, manifest in ceasing, manifest in abiding, and manifest in changing." In the Sutra Pitaka, it is said that arising, aging, abiding, and ceasing are said to be non-associated formations. Based on this, most of our own schools, both higher and lower, consider them to be non-associated formations. Therefore, the arising, ceasing, and abiding of form, mind, and mental factors are also considered to be non-associated, and those above the Sutra Pitaka consider them to be nominally existent, while the Vaibhashikas consider them to be substantially existent. Because there are characteristics such as arising, form and so on are called conditioned phenomena, the characteristics of arising and so on.

Furthermore, the Sautrāntikas (Mdo sde pa) and others consider the functions of arising, abiding, and ceasing of those dharmas to exist. However, the Vaibhāṣikas (Bye brag tu smra ba) believe that, as will be explained below, form and so on have agents that produce, destroy, and maintain them. Later scholars believe that if the aggregates of form and so on are regarded as conditioned dharmas, they cannot be represented by arising and so on, because there are other meanings such as self-arising, so they can be represented as conditioned dharmas. But earlier scholars did not think so, because the Sautrāntikas denied other entities besides the arising of form and so on, so the Vaibhāṣikas retorted, how can the dharma that is the basis of the characteristic itself be its characteristic? In response, they said that just as the aggregates of things like nodules and the hardness of cattle and the earth element are not other entities, but are characteristics, so arising and so on are similar, as stated in the commentary on the Abhidharmakośa. Secondly, denying self-establishment from the perspective of the sign and the signified has already been explained in the fifth chapter, so here we use other reasoning to deny it, which is divided into three parts: denying the characteristic of conditioned dharmas as self-established; thereby showing that the self-establishment of unconditioned dharmas is also denied; explaining that such denial does not contradict the scriptures. The first part is divided into two parts: denying common characteristics; denying special characteristics. The first part is divided into two parts: jointly denying the three characteristics; denying them separately. The first part is divided into three parts: denying by examining whether they are conditioned or not; denying by examining whether they are individual or collective; denying by examining whether there are other characteristics. The first part is: if arising is considered to be a characteristic of conditioned dharmas, then is arising a conditioned or unconditioned dharma? If it is the former, then arising should also have the characteristics of arising, abiding, and ceasing, and have three entities different from itself, that is, become a collection. Because arising, abiding, and ceasing are unmistakable for all conditioned dharmas, and it is believed that arising and so on need to be represented as conditioned dharmas from the perspective of having other entities. If this is the case, then how can it be said that arising is a characteristic of conditioned dharmas? This sentence can also be applied here, that is, arising is the signified that is signified by the characteristic that is represented as a conditioned dharma, so it is not the characteristic that represents form and so on as conditioned dharmas. Just as hardness can represent the earth element, hardness is the
