I, who have the nature of peace, am free from all conceptualizations. The essence that is liberated from all the elaborations of knowledge and objects of knowledge, the ultimate reality, the nature of emptiness, is invisible. In Buddhapālita's work, it is argued that if there were no aggregates, elements, or sense bases, then the Buddhas' teaching of the Dharma based on them would become meaningless. In response, we declare the elimination of the two extremes of existence and non-existence, but we do not say that they do not exist, so for us, the teaching of the Dharma does not become meaningless. For those who hold onto the extremes of existence and non-existence, the teaching of the Dharma becomes meaningless, because if they possess these views, they will not attain Nirvana. This is the refutation of all three arguments. Secondly, the negation of the characteristics, signs, and the nature of existence and non-existence of the six elements is established not only by speculation but also by definitive scriptures. And, in order to show that this treatise will explain all the scriptures in which the elements are negated in this way, only the aspect of combining with definitive scriptures is now stated. Do not abide in the extremes of existence and non-existence, as in the previously quoted Samadhiraja Sutra and other scriptures. In the Brahma Visesacinti Pariprccha Sutra, it is also said: Whatever is the internal earth element and whatever is the external earth element is the meaning of non-duality. The Tathagata, with wisdom and knowledge, has awakened to the complete and perfect enlightenment of this non-duality, non-differentiation, and single nature, which is without characteristics. And it says: The nature of space in the world, space also has no nature. Therefore, by realizing it through that, the world is not stained by Dharma. And in the Manjushri Vikridita Sutra, it is also said: Daughter, how should the elements be viewed? The daughter said: Manjushri, for example, when the three thousand great thousand worlds are burned by the fire of the eon, there is not even ash left. Thus it was declared. Therefore, the reasoning of this treatise should understand these scriptures, especially all the scriptures that declare that phenomena are free from characteristics and the basis of characteristics, as the eye of viewing, and that eye should be completely purified. Thirdly, regarding the mentioned names, signs, and existence and non-existence of things of the elements, if it exists not merely by the designation of names, but by its own nature, then there should be names and signs, etc.

The meaning established by reason as unchangeable should be ascertained. Then, based solely on the establishment of terms of names, the meaning of the two truths, whether names and signs and things exist or not, should be ascertained in the most reasonable way. This is the explanation of the fifth chapter, which is the nature of eight verses called "Examination of the Elements." The second (part) has three: refuting that the dependent afflictions exist; refuting that the characteristics of arising, ceasing, and abiding exist; refuting that cause, action, and agent exist. The first (part) has three: explaining the text of the treatise; combining it with the definitive meaning of the scriptures; summarizing the meaning and indicating the name. The first (part) is: Here it is said that the aggregates, elements, and sources are inherently existent, because the afflictions that are dependent on them are apprehended. As the Bhagavan (the Blessed One) said: Monks, childish ordinary beings who are not endowed with learning fall into the realm of imputation, that is, after seeing forms with the eye, they become attached to pleasant places. After they become attached, they generate desire. After they become attached, they perform actions arising from desire with body, speech, and mind. Thus, it is taught that afflictions such as desire are the cause of all afflictions. Here, if desire and so on are inherently existent, then the aggregates and so on should also be inherently existent, but that is not the case. This (part) has three: refuting that desire and attachment are inherently existent; summarizing the refutations; applying this reasoning to others as well. The first (part) has two: refuting that they arise sequentially; refuting that they arise simultaneously. The first (part) has two: refuting whether attachment exists before desire; refuting whether desire exists before attachment. The first (part) is: If desire is inherently existent, then it does not deviate from three possibilities, but the case of existing simultaneously with attachment will be refuted below, so here it should be examined whether there is desire that exists before attachment, or desire that exists after attachment? If there is no desire before desire, that is, there is an attachment that is separate from desire, then attachment exists first, and based on that, desire exists. If that is the case, then there was attachment before, and then there is desire later, what reason is there for saying that? Even if it is separate from desire, it is still attachment.
