What is it? Because seeing depends on the aggregation of causes and conditions, and if that aggregation is broken, one cannot see. Therefore, seeing or not seeing objects is merely established by conceptual thought, and it is shown that it does not exist by its own nature. The eye relies on appearance and sees various forms, both pleasing and displeasing. Since seeing depends on being in such a state of dependence, therefore, the eye never sees. This means that seeing depends on the aggregation of causes and conditions, so the eye itself never sees forms. This and the previous one both negate inherent existence with the sign of dependent origination. Whatever pleasing sound is, it never enters inside either. It does not go, nor is it specifically located, but sounds arise from the power of thought. This shows that although objects do not come to the senses, and the senses do not go to the place of objects, the senses enjoy objects only by the power of conceptualization. Similarly, the sound of songs, dances, and music is not something to be grasped. Like a dream, it is the cause of ignorance and attachment for the unskilled. The unskilled are destroyed by clinging to all sorts of thoughts, and beings, like children, are enslaved by afflictions. This is what is said. Seeing that one's own mind is bound by clinging to the truth of objects and has become subject to afflictions, I, with the wisdom of the wise, realize that these things do not exist by their own nature even to the slightest extent. How can a child who is unskilled in the truth of reason act like a slave of afflictions? Thinking in this way, one should practice yoga in equipoise with emptiness like the sky, and in subsequent attainment with emptiness like illusion. Thus, the reasoning in this chapter is praised by those who have the scriptures that show the selflessness of all that is to be taken, that takes, and the taker as the eye of sight. Having found that eye, one should experience the feast of joy that comes from seeing the thusness of those scriptures. Third, when establishing the six objects as the taken, the six senses as the taker, and the six persons as the taker, it is not merely established by the power of nominal terms, but these things exist by the power of their own nature.

Having recognized the way of grasping, if it is as it is grasped, then just as it is determined by reason, there is no place to put karma, action, and agent, and it must be determined in this way. Then, all eighteen elements, while not established in their own nature, will effortlessly appear as the illusory agent, action, and agent that appear on top of that. At that time, for all that is established as seeing with the eye, etc., one should truly establish that this is most suitable for the meaning of illusion, because examining with reason is searching for whether the eye, etc., exists with a self-established nature, not just searching for existence or non-existence, so when it is not found after examination, it will negate the existence of self-nature, but it is definitely not negating the eye, etc. As it is said, in the commentary on the Hundred Treatises, it says: If the eye, etc., do not exist, then why are these faculties of the eye, etc., established as the nature of the ripening of karma? Do we negate the very nature of the ripening of karma? If it is said that establishing the negation of the eye, etc., then why is it not negated? Because our examination is focused on searching for self-nature. Here, we negate the establishment of things by their own nature, but we do not negate the ripening of karma, which is done by the eye, etc., and arises dependently. Therefore, because it exists, whatever is called ripening, the eye, etc., exists. In this way, the boundary between what is negated and what is not negated is stated very clearly. Therefore, the way of existence here is: the seer relies on seeing, and seeing itself also arises relying on the seer, and apart from that, the cause of establishment is not seen. As it is said, and from this, one should also understand the rest. The reasoning explained in the previous chapter can negate the truth of the sense bases, but in order to understand the uncommon reasoning that negates the nature of seeing, etc., this chapter is explained, and it should also be understood in other chapters. In this way, the infinite difference of wisdom that examines suchness will increase, and all enjoyment of the six objects will be illusory.
