Even though I'm just placing them for a moment, I feel uneasy leaving them there. There are only two ways to place them, and if I don't like the first, I feel there's no reason to place them in the second, so I must direct my mind in that direction. If there is a producer and something produced, there is a meaning of cause and effect, but it's just a name, and it's unreasonable to think that way, because just by the sound of an unreasonable reason, it denies the existence of non-name meaning, and the meaning established by valid cognition should not be cut off. Just existing as a name also shows that although it is impossible to exist without relying on the imputation of a name, it does not show that everything that is imputed by name exists. It has already been said. Thus, external and internal causes and conditions, such as seeds and sprouts, and the arising of consciousness dependent on faculties and objects, whatever clearly appears as a basis, observe how the grasping, as previously described, grasps, and then from either the side of the result or the side of the cause, completely refute the reasons for existing by their own nature, and even if it is not refuted slightly, it will be bound by its grasping and cannot be liberated. Then, these causes and effects appear only as names, and there is no denying the causes and effects that bring benefit and harm. The cause of mere imputation produces the result. I grasp only those things that are established by their own nature, which is a reversal, and I must be sure of this, and not harm the certainty of cause and effect dependent origination. If one mistakenly thinks that there is no place to establish these as cause and effect in one's own system, and only exists in name, then it is a great fault of accusing the view. The examination of conditions is called the essence of fourteen verses, the explanation of the first chapter. Second, there are three ways to negate the self-nature of a person by imputing it to the actions of going and coming: explaining the text of the treatise, combining it with the definitive meaning of the scriptures, and summarizing the meaning and indicating the name. First: Here it is said that even if birth is blocked, the absence of cessation can be established, but in order to establish that dependent origination has no going and coming, it is necessary to state the uncommon reason for blocking it. Here, blocking going and coming is the blocking of the nature of the object of uncontaminated wisdom.

The discussion on preventing going and coming, and the commentary on the eighth chapter also states that the goer and the act of going are established in dependence on each other, and are not inherently existent. Therefore, the inherent existence of going and coming should be refuted. There are two parts to this refutation: an extensive explanation and a conclusion. The first part has two sections: refuting actions separately in relation to the object and the agent, and refuting actions jointly in relation to the object and the agent. The first part has four sections: refuting based on the object, refuting based on the agent, refuting the proof of the existence of action, and refuting based on the action. The first part has two sections: refuting action in general on the three paths, and refuting action specifically in relation to stepping. The first is: If the act of going exists inherently, it must exist on one of the three paths, but that is also unreasonable. Because one does not go on the path that has already been traversed, i.e., there is no act of going, because the act of going is present. The form of the path, the act of going has ceased, because it is past. For the moment, this is to show the order of refutation. Moreover, one does not go on the path that has not yet been traversed, because not yet traversed means that the act of going has not yet arisen, and the act of going is present. There is also no inherent act of going in stepping, because the place that the goer has previously crossed is the past, and the place that has not yet been crossed is the future. Apart from these two, i.e., the path being stepped on, which is neither of these two, cannot be known by a valid cognizer of truth. If it is thought that the side stepped on by the foot that is currently going is the stepping, and that is not the past where the act of going has ceased, nor the future where the act has not arisen, then the statement that there is nothing apart from the past and the future is not established. The foot is also established by being designated as an aggregation of subtle particles, therefore it has many parts, front and back. At that time, the back side of the particle residing on the toe of the foot belongs to the category of the past, and the front side of the particle residing on the heel belongs to the category of the future, and there is no foot apart from the particles, therefore there is no stepping apart from the past and the future. The Clear Words also similarly state, Therefore, it is unreasonable to refute the three aggregates that are not two. If it were reasonable, then the place stepped on by the foot from the heel to the tip of the toe would also not
