The cessation of the cause and the arising of the effect are also simultaneous. Therefore, just as the act of cessation at the moment of the cause's cessation precedes the arising of the sprout, so too the act of arising at the moment of the effect's arising precedes the cessation of the cause, and these two are also cause and effect. Since the cessation of the cause and the effect are simultaneous, it is meaningless to say "immediately following." Then, in the commentary on the *Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning*: "The seed is not considered the cause of the sprout only when it exists, but it is considered the cause of the sprout when it has ceased to exist." For example, others assert that the previous consciousness, having ceased to exist, is the immediately preceding condition for the subsequent consciousness. If the previous consciousness is the cause of the other consciousness when it exists, then the two would exist simultaneously. How can it be explained that the cessation of the cause is the cause of the cessation of the effect, as in the statement, "The immediately ceased cause is the condition for the arising of the effect," when arguing that non-existence is also a cause? There is no fault, because the *Hundred Treatises* says: "When the cause transforms, it becomes the cause of another." And its commentary says that just as the seed does not become the cause of the sprout without abandoning its previous state, so too, at the time of the effect, if the state of the cause is not abandoned, then that which is considered the cause will not become the cause of that effect, because it is said that the seed and the previous consciousness do not become the cause until they have disappeared. If this is not the case, it would become cause and effect simultaneous, which is also understandable. If the cause does not transform into another form, it will not become the cause, and if it transforms, the cause is reversed, so it will not become the cause either. In the *Perfection of Wisdom Abridged*, it says: "The previous moment, interrupted by another moment, at the moment of ceasing, opens the way for the arising of the subsequent moment, therefore it is its immediately preceding condition." To this view, since non-material things do not abide in a place, there is no opening of opportunity. And the *Abhidharma* says: "The six just passed, whatever consciousness is, that is mind." Therefore, since the mind that has just ceased is a condition, it is unreasonable. This was refuted, and Buddhapālita's view that the unceased is a condition was also refuted. The *Blazing Syllogism* also says: "From the cessation of the seed, the sprout..."

etc., because it appears that they will arise. If sprouts could arise even without the destruction of seeds, then things that are present in cotton, etc., would also arise. It is said thus. It is also said that destruction and arising are simultaneous, so they are not causes. In this regard, the earlier teachers explained in the same way, seeing the fault that it is impossible for sprouts to actually arise from seeds, and for the preceding similar consciousness to be the actual immediately preceding condition for the subsequent consciousness. Then, how should we understand the words "the six just ceased" and "the immediately preceding condition is the mind and mental factors that have just ceased, except for the last one"? It should be understood that "just ceased" is said in the sense of ceasing at the time of the result and arising immediately after that, not in the sense of ceasing immediately before the result. If it were not so, it would not be appropriate to say that the consciousness of the six that have just ceased is the mind, because the destruction of consciousness cannot be the mind. Therefore, "destruction" indicates that this cause has a cause-and-effect sequence, and "immediately preceding" indicates that a real cause is needed. Fourth, if someone says: "If this exists, then that arises, and if this does not exist, then that does not arise, that is the lord, and it is established by its own nature." Then, because it is dependent arising, all things are without inherent existence, and at that time, their existence is not inherently existent. Therefore, it is not appropriate to assert that the cause called "because this exists, then this exists" and the result called "this arises" have inherent existence. If it is not appropriate, then what will become the lord of whom? Therefore, the co-emergent cause is also not inherently existent, so even from the definition, it cannot be established that the causes have inherent existence. The third has three parts: refuting that causes have inherent existence by the reason of producing the result; refuting the inherent establishment of whether the result is a cause or not; refuting the definite inherent nature of cause and non-cause. First, if someone says: "Although it cannot be said how the cause produces things, but because we see that woolen cloth, etc., arises from cotton, etc., we know that these are the causes of the result." Then, cotton, oil, copper wire, and wooden shuttle
