It is said that the venerable Pakokana clearly pointed out "only this", therefore the word "only this" exists in the scriptures. Therefore, the dharma that is the object of focus does not exist before the focus, so its object of focus also does not exist in the ultimate truth. "What if" is the question. "How does it change" is to explain the reason. Then, what are the dharmas with objects of focus that the venerable spoke of? They are all minds and mental factors. Since you say that these are with objects of focus, but you deny the object of focus, isn't this contradictory? The venerable replied: Having an object of focus is conventional truth, not ultimate truth, so there is no fault. It means that what is negated by reasoning is established in the ultimate truth; and the meaning of the scriptures is established in the conventional truth, so there is no contradiction. This is to say that for the object to be negated, a distinction needs to be made. The third point is: If someone says that the moment another thing ceases, it is the immediately preceding cause of the arising of another thing, because it exists by its own nature. If the sprout and other fruit dharmas have not arisen, then before arising, the cause such as the seed has ceased, so cessation is not reasonable. Therefore, the moment another thing ceases, it cannot be the immediately preceding cause of another thing. If the seed has ceased and does not exist before the fruit arises, then what is the cause of the sprout arising? There is no cause, because the seed does not exist in the immediately preceding moment of the sprout arising. The cessation of the seed also cannot be the cause of the sprout not arising, because the cessation of the seed and the arising of the sprout are simultaneous. What is the cause of the seed ceasing? There is no cause, because the cessation of the seed does not exist before the sprout arises. Therefore, if one thinks that the sprout arises after the seed has ceased, then both of these will become causeless, but this is not accepted. The word "also" means that if the fruit has not arisen and the cause has not ceased, then it cannot be the immediately preceding cause, and even if it has ceased, it cannot be the immediately preceding cause, so it should be understood in this way. In the case where the cause ceases after the fruit has arisen, the immediately preceding cause should also be negated. If the sprout has just arisen and the seed has ceased, even so, the immediately preceding cause cannot be established. Because someone would ask: How can the sprout, which has just arisen, be the cause of the seed ceasing? Even if it has ceased, how can it be a cause?

Refuting the translation of "coming forth." When the act of a sprout growing is completed, if the seed dies, then what is the cause of the seed dying and the sprout growing? Both will become causeless. The reason for this is that, for the growth of a sprout, the manifest action does not exist in the immediately preceding moment of the seed dying; and for the dying of the seed, the manifest action does not exist in the immediately preceding moment of the sprout growing. If it is said that when the seed is dying, the sprout is growing, then the act of the seed dying is the cause of the sprout that is growing, and the act of the sprout growing is the cause of the seed dying, so it will not become causeless, then this is also unreasonable, because for cause and effect that are established by their own nature, the sprout must exist at the time when the sprout is growing, and if so, then the seed that is dying and the sprout that is growing both exist simultaneously, so the meaning of "immediately preceding" is not established. Even if one thinks that two actions occur simultaneously, immediately preceding is unreasonable, because for things that are established by their own characteristics, if two actions occur simultaneously, then two dharmas must also exist simultaneously. Since there is no such thing as the cause not dying and dying before the fruit arises, therefore the immediately preceding cause is unreasonable, therefore it is unreasonable to say that the immediately preceding cause after dying, the immediately preceding cause of the fruit arising, exists by its own nature, so the third line ends here, and the reason for making it the third line is for the sake of rhyme, and here it is from the perspective of explaining the meaning. Therefore, the sentence "immediately preceding cause is unreasonable" should be placed after the third line, but if it is not to prevent it from being placed after the first two lines. Pages 101 to 200. Or, considering the reason for refuting arising earlier, two "dharmas" are spoken, according to this statement, it refutes the existence of arising and dying by their own nature, thereby refuting the existence of the immediately preceding cause in the ultimate sense. If according to the former statement, then the unarisen and the undied are both from the perspective of convention. The two "also dies" are the same as before. Here, Bodhipālita (Sanskrit, Bodhipālita, बोधिपालित, 菩提巴利多,菩提护) seems to be speaking in detail, so it is said in this way. If one thinks about how the cause dying and not dying should be treated in one's own system before the fruit arises, then the *Entering the Middle Way* says that the seed is dying and the sprout is growing both exist simultaneously, as such Buddhapālita (Sanskrit, Buddhapālita, बुद्धपालित,佛护) also thinks.
