Since I am not truly existent, the idea that phenomena have inherent existence is meaningless, and this is the result of those reasonings, which is the view of Buddhapālita. The second point is: if we examine whether a cause has an action or not, what is the use of this to us? Because, relying on causes such as the eye, consciousness and so on arise, therefore the eye and so on are considered to have the nature of being a cause. If someone says this, then the word "གྲག་" indicates that the author does not agree. The Sautrāntikas believe that at the time when the effect arises, the cause has an action, and before that it does not. This is what is said in the "Lamp of Wisdom." Since the act of arising has already been denied and it has just been shown that the cause is unreasonable, it is inappropriate to say these things, and even if they are said, there is a fault. Because from seeds and so on, as long as the fruit, such as sprouts, does not arise, that is, as long as the act of arising is not seen, how can these not be the cause of the fruit? They are simply not the cause. Moreover, since only that which is related to the act of arising of the fruit is considered to be the cause, it must be admitted in this way. If it is not a cause, then the fruit will not arise from them either, just as oil cannot be extracted from sand. If it is thought that seeds and so on are not causes before the fruit arises, but become causes at the time of manifestation, that is unreasonable, because then everything would become the cause of everything. If it is said that even if they are not causes, they become causes by depending on some other cause, so there is no fault, then seeds and so on, although they were not causes before, become causes of sprouts and so on by depending on another cause, and that other cause, before its own fruit arises, is not a cause because it does not possess the act of arising. Therefore, it also depends on other causes, and that cause also needs to be considered in this way, so there will be no end. If that happens, the fundamental cause will not be established. If it is thought that only that which is related to the act of arising of the fruit is the definition of a cause, then those previous ones that are not related to it will not be causes, and if that is the case, then they will not become causes even at the time of later manifestation, therefore there is no cause.

Now, let's begin the translation. The self-tradition posits that the action of a result arising is a function, and this function has both direct and indirect aspects. The second aspect is: if we say, "This arises in dependence on this," and because of this relationship, we say, "This is the condition for this thing," then this relationship must be examined in terms of either existence or non-existence. A condition is not reasonable for something that does not exist. Moreover, a condition is also not reasonable for something that exists. Or, it must be examined as a condition for either of these two. 'Te' introduces the remainder. How is it unreasonable? Because no one would assert that a result arises from something that does not exist within the knowable, therefore, the result does not exist at the time of the cause. Furthermore, it is not asserted that the arising of a non-entity, which is merely a severance of the existence of the result at the time of the cause, occurs. Therefore, the assertion that sprouts, etc., which do not exist at the time of the cause, arise is refuted. If the result does not exist prior to its arising, then if one were to say, "Whose condition is this?" since there is no object to become a condition, what is there to say? It is not appropriate to state that the condition for the non-existent cloth is yarn. If it is said that cloth arises from yarn, so even if it does not exist now, yarn can be considered a condition for cloth in the form of future arising, then if it arises at certain times, that may be the case. However, here, when refuting arising that is established by its own nature, the arising predicated on that never exists, so even considering the cloth that will arise in the future, how can it be said that it is its condition? In the world, seeing cloth arising from yarn, and considering the later cloth, one says that the previous yarn is the condition for the cloth. This is establishing yarn as the condition relative to the cloth, and also establishing the cloth as the result relying on that. It is merely established as a designation relying on mutual relations, and it does not exist by its own nature. Therefore, if one considers the cloth that will arise in the future and establishes the previous yarn as the condition, then one must acknowledge dependence and designation. For something established by its own nature, that is in no way reasonable. This is the reason that can refute the opponent and is dissimilar to oneself. If one thinks that the result exists before it arises, so it is the condition of existence
