From the [root text]: Suffering is self-caused, caused by others, or caused by both; the notion of causelessness is mere speculation. You have stated that it arises dependently. And from this very text: The agent acts dependent on the action, and the action also depends on that very agent; apart from arising dependently, no cause for accomplishment is seen. And: The designation of dharma is this: this being, that arises; this being born, that is born; for example, due to ignorance, actions arise; due to actions, consciousness arises, and so forth. Only this much is taught. Having quoted these passages, the first scripture does not allow the acceptance of four kinds of birth, but allows birth dependent on conditions. The word "apart from" in the middle passage indicates that mutual dependence is the means of accomplishment, and there is no means of accomplishment by inherent existence. The last passage is evidence that existence is established by dependence on existence, and birth is established by dependence on birth. In the Entering the Middle Way, it is said that even in conventional truth, birth is not reasonable, based on the reasoning that examines whether birth occurs from self or other. The commentary clearly explains that this refutes birth with inherent characteristics and substantial existence in conventional truth. Thus, fruits such as sprouts arise dependent on causes and conditions such as seeds, and therefore there is no fourfold birth. In this way, it is easy to refute causelessness, and although the nature is one, it is contradictory for it to produce itself, as previously shown. Even if the nature is different, it is contradictory for it to arise from an unrelated other. Therefore, it does not arise from both. Therefore, it is only by having to accept that a sprout arises dependent on a seed that it is possible to refute those four. This is the special characteristic of the king of reason, the reason of dependent origination. If there is no fourfold birth, then what arises from where? The Madhyamaka path of dependent origination should not be refuted. Although the meaning of just this verse, "not from self," is that there is definitely no arising by nature, one will not be impoverished in the cause of meditating on that very meaning. Therefore, those who wish to understand and meditate on the meaning of the unborn nature of their own mind should also study just this much. Secondly, there are two parts: refuting the argument that contradicts the scriptures, and abandoning the contradiction with the scriptures. The first is: one's own substantialist school

Those who assert self-nature say that it is meaningless to arise from oneself, so self-nature cannot arise, and because there is no self-nature, it is impossible to arise from both. Causelessness is complete annihilation, so even if it is refuted, it is reasonable, but it is unreasonable to refute arising from others by saying "it does not arise from others", because the Victorious One has declared that the four conditions, only transforming into others, are the cause of the arising of all things. Thus, there are four types of conditions: the causal condition, the objective condition, the immediately preceding condition, and the dominant condition. "Also and the same" means that the cause is a condition, and similarly, the objective and so on are also conditions, and this is how it is connected. Where are these four conditions established? Some schools say that the causal condition is, as stated in the Abhidharmakośa: "Cause is called the five causes", the five causes other than the efficient cause. The objective condition is: "Object, all dharmas." That is, all dharmas that are the objects of the six consciousnesses. The immediately preceding condition is: "Mind and mental events that have arisen, the last is non-similar, immediately preceding." That is, the mind and mental events that arose earlier, other than entering cessation. The dominant condition is: "The efficient cause is said to be the dominant", as it is thought to be said about the efficient cause. The six causes are, as stated in the Abhidharmakośa: "The efficient cause and the co-emergent cause, the similar, corresponding, and associated cause, the pervasive and the ripening cause, cause is considered to be six types." Some schools say: Accomplishing is the cause, thus showing the characteristic, that is, for something, what exists in the nature of a seed, is the causal condition of that thing. Just as an old man stands up, the mind and mental events that are arising, in the manner of relying on a cane, by what is it produced, that is its objective condition. The immediately preceding condition is the immediately preceding cause of the arising of the result after the cause has ceased, for example, the immediately preceding cause of the arising of the sprout after the seed has ceased. The Commentary on Entering the Middle Way says: "The similarity of the sprout immediately after the seed has ceased is like the immediately preceding condition." The Clear Words also says that when refuting the immediately preceding condition, it refutes the similarity of the sprout as the immediately preceding condition, and Buddhapālita also thinks the same, so this is the school that admits that similarity is also the immediately preceding condition for form. If something exists, what
