If it does not merely tend towards a single thing that exists by its own nature, then for things that are not distinguished by whether they exist by their own nature or not, it will not be established as a valid cognition. Therefore, if a valid cognition that measures things that do not exist by their own nature is used to establish a thesis with two aspects (probandum and probans), then because what is to be established is already established, it goes beyond asserting inherent existence. If a valid cognition that measures things that exist by their own nature is used to establish it, then because what is to be refuted cannot be refuted, and without relying on the assertions of others, the valid cognition cannot independently establish the thesis from the way things exist, therefore it does not accept autonomy. However, because the meaning of harmlessness established by valid cognition must be asserted or accepted by the opponent, the probandum is established through the sign that is established for the opponent, that is, it is known to the opponent himself, or by observing the previous proponent, it is established through inference known to others. Because these are considered extremely difficult to understand, they have been explained in detail in the Essence of Eloquence and other texts, and should be understood from them. The second part has two aspects: first, refuting the arising of the three extremes (existence, non-existence, both existence and non-existence); and second, after refuting the four extremes (existence, non-existence, both existence and non-existence, neither existence nor non-existence), the meaning that is established, including the abandonment of debate. The first point is: Although many different reasonings for refuting other-arising are mentioned in the scriptures, Buddhapālita, in the twentieth chapter of his commentary, refutes it with the reasoning that "if it arises from another, then the cause and non-cause would become the same." Chandrakirti also refutes it with the same reasoning in the Madhyamakāvatāra. In the commentary Prasannapadā, in the section on "the nature of phenomena," both verbal refutation and the previous reasoning are used to refute it. Buddhapālita said, "Arising from another is also non-existent, because everything would arise from everything." Here, the reason for making the extreme inference that "if it arises from another, then everything would arise from everything" is that the "other" in other-arising does not refer to the different others understood through different names of things, but to the difference established by its own nature. If it is established as inherently established, then the sprout's dependence on the seed is contradictory, therefore it can refute the relationship, and if it arises from a different thing that has no relationship, then everything would arise from everything. Therefore, the way in which the seed is different from the sprout by its own nature is the same as the way in which charcoal is different, so the arising or non-arising of the sprout from these two is also the same, as stated in the Madhyamakāvatāra: "Everything would also arise from everything, because of what reason? Not the producer, not..."

The body is also similar to otherness, as it is said. Those that are distinct by their own characteristics, it is not reasonable for them to belong to the same continuum. Because distinctness established by own characteristics prevents the same continuum and cause and effect, and if distinctness is established by own characteristics, it is said that it cannot tolerate dependence. Therefore, some push with the force of the same opposite, and some think that cause and effect must have before and after, and for others, the key point that simultaneity is needed, saying that this is an excessive inference, this is not the key point of this reasoning. On this, Legden means that if the established object to be proven and the means of proof that have been realized are placed without refuting them, then everything will arise from everything, which is not a valid reason, so there is no proof of one's own side. Since no harm of direct perception etc. has been shown to those who accept other-birth, there is also no refutation of the other side, just like the words of Sau Tenpa, it is irrelevant. If it is refuted, then the meaning of refuting the sign is that some arise from some, and the meaning of negating other-birth cannot be applied to those who have other-birth, because this is the time to show that there is no other-birth in the ultimate sense, that is what he thought. Therefore, with the reason that some arise from some, it must be shown that there is something in things that is not just a mere separation of other-birth, because there is arising from self or both or without cause. The meaning of not arising from others is that the aspect of merely separating other-births is somewhat contradictory to the former. The commentary explains that the two lines of "things whatever" and "somewhat contradictory." On this, even if there is no establishment of one's own side by one's own continuum, there is no fault, because the other's acceptance of other-birth can be refuted by the reasoning mentioned earlier, so it is an excessive refutation. On this, since the reason of definite cause and effect can also establish the absence of other-birth, even if a refutation is thrown out, there is no fault of contradicting the tenet. Because it is only making a separation from arising from others. In name, although the Madhyamikas who accept establishment by their own characteristics accept other-birth in name, the two teachers do not even approve of it in name. In innate clinging, although there is clinging to the existence of a self established by its own characteristics, etc., but cause and effect cling to others distinct by their own characteristics.
