If one clings to the emptiness of phenomena and inherent existence, and if one does not merely grasp the severance of the elaborations to be refuted, but instead grasps other phenomena such as the existence of selflessness apart from that, then one is engaging with the characteristics of true clinging, and not meditating on the meaning of the Prajñāpāramitā, so it is said. If one grasps only the negation without the elaborations to be refuted, then one is engaging with the characteristics of engaging with the Prajñāpāramitā, and not engaging with the Prajñāpāramitā, considering this, it is said that the five aggregates should also be thoroughly viewed as empty of inherent existence. Also, in the Entering [the Middle Way], it says: "Therefore, the yogi who views the emptiness of self and what belongs to self will be completely liberated." And so on, it is also said many times that one must view emptiness and selflessness, and it should be understood that this is not contradictory. Otherwise, if it is said that engaging with characteristics is not abiding in the unborn, then if one engages with the unborn, one is not engaging with the Prajñāpāramitā, so it is said, and it would become contradictory. If one does not distinguish this method of severing elaborations through the two negations, and is confused by some scriptures that say not to cling to emptiness or non-emptiness, self or non-self, etc., then it seems that many great obstacles have arisen in the way of cultivating the view of selflessness. Furthermore, in the Chapter on the World, it says: "This is the negation of existence itself, it is not the complete grasping of non-existence. When it is said 'not black,' it is not said 'it is white.'" It might be thought that since the object of negation is merely a negation, it is not reasonable to make that negation the thesis to be proven by a sign. However, this is quoted in the Prajñāpāramitā as proof that "it is merely the negation of inherent existence that has been done, and it has not been said to be the very non-existence of things," and the commentary also explains that it is a means of knowing that it is a non-affirming negation. It can also be understood through examples, for example, when it is said "this is not black," it is merely the negation of black, and it is not said to be white other than that, so it is said that saying it is white is negated, but merely negating black is not said, how could it be a negation? Similarly, saying "without inherent existence" is merely the negation of existence, and it should be explained that it is not the complete grasping that there is non-inherent existence other than that. Therefore, merely negating inherent existence does not mean that that word does not express it, that mind does not take it as an object, and that it is not proven by a sign. Although it is not said to be the very non-existence of things, but

In the 《Og Ge Barwa》, it says, "Regarding the arising of earth and so on in the ultimate sense, it is merely negating that nature, not establishing a self-nature of a different entity." As it is said, it is not merely cutting off self-nature, nor does it establish abiding in the self-nature of no self-nature. The meaning is that from that, it does not establish the self-nature of non-existence by way of establishing it by negating existence, but rather explains that it is intended to show the path of abandoning the two extremes. Similarly, in the 《Clear Words》, it is also said, "We do not establish non-existence and existence, but rather prevent others from establishing existence and establishing non-existence, therefore we want to eliminate the two extremes and establish the Middle Way." Saying this, it is also merely refuting the extremes of existence and non-existence that the other party has promised, and does not establish anything else other than that. It is not that merely negating the two extremes is not established, because it is said that the Middle Way is established by eliminating the two extremes. Second, there are two divisions: the reasoning that refutes self-arising and the reasoning that refutes other-arising and so on. The first has three divisions: establishing one's own tenets, the way in which others criticize them, and explaining the reasons why that fault does not exist in one's own tenets. First, the Samkhyas see that it is unreasonable for internal objects such as the eyes and external objects such as sprouts to arise when they do not exist in the causal state. Therefore, they believe that things that exist in an unclear way as the self-nature of causes such as seeds arise from them, and they do not believe that they arise once they are clear. When refuting it, the refutation is made by the fault of becoming meaningless, that is, the sprouts and so on will become meaningless to arise again, because they have already obtained their own self-nature. If arising is for the purpose of obtaining one's own self-nature, then there is no need to arise again after it has been obtained. If it is said that even if one's own self-nature has been obtained, it is not contradictory to have to arise, then the refutation is made by the fault of becoming endless, that is, if this is the case, then the sprouts and so on will never stop arising again, because even if they have been established, they must arise again. To this, the other party argues that things that exist unclearly in the form of potential must arise clearly, and things that have already become clear do not need to arise, so the previous and subsequent inferences are not universally applicable, but this is a fault.
