The way these apply is that if one says that the self of past and future lives and the nature of the two are different, then, for the general self that is not distinguished by times such as past and future lives, and upon which Devadatta focuses and from which the thought "I" arises, it is unreasonable for it to be inherently different from the self of this life of that person, so it must be accepted as inherently one. If that is the case, then just as the self of this life appears newly here without being in previous births, that general self also appears in the same way, so that general self has a beginning, and a self or mere sentient being like that has the fault of appearing newly here without having appeared in previous lives, and if the mere self appears newly in this life, then before that there needs to be another self that establishes it, but since there is none, it is also unreasonable for the mere self to be newly made in this life. If Devadatta's mere self appears newly in this life, then that appearance becomes causeless, because before that there was no Devadatta and no self of the same continuum that has passed, and for the self of this life, there needs to be an agent self that precedes it. Or the word "or" is the meaning of distinction, that is to say, either I will become made, or I will not admit that I did not appear in the past; either my appearance will become causeless, or I will not admit that I did not appear in the past. The second case is that, as said before, it is unreasonable to view the nature of appearing in the past and the nature of not appearing in the past as existing by nature, and since each is unreasonable, it is also unreasonable to view the appearance and non-appearance of the self in the past as a collection. In this way, since the collection of the two is unreasonable, it is also unreasonable to view, by negating the two, the nature of being neither appearing nor non-appearing in the past as existing by nature. In this way, seeing dependent arising as it is does not rely on those views that rely on the extreme of the past, because those views are grasping things that exist in another way as another way, but realizing dependent arising does not have such attachment. In this way, the meaning of the term "I was here in the past" is

It is not for that individual, but only for those who follow them, without distinguishing between past and future times, etc. If this principle is understood, then the meaning of the many statements in the sutras such as, "I was in the past life..." is that the Buddha at the time of speaking these words is the same entity as the people who appeared in the past lives. By saying this, one can avoid the wrong views based on the past extreme, and also avoid the wrong views based on the future extreme. Secondly, refuting those views that inherently hold that "I will appear at some other time in the future" or "I will not appear at that time" is the same as refuting the views on whether or not it existed in the past, so its wording can be changed to refute it. That is, the statement "will be born in the future" is unreasonable. What is born in the future is not this one now. And so on, refuting the view that the self of the past and future lives and the two are one. And the statement "will not be born in the future" is also unreasonable. What is born in the future part is not different from this. And so on, refuting the view that the self and the two are other, these are equally applicable. The third part is divided into two points: refuting the first two extreme views of permanence and impermanence, and refuting the latter two extreme views. The first point is: here some people perform virtuous deeds and are reborn in the realm of the gods. Then, if these two are inherently existent, are they essentially the same or different? If it is like the first case, then it will become that the god is the person, and in this way, the person will become permanent, because he has not abandoned the essence of the person and has obtained the birth of the god. If the person is the god, then he will also become unborn, because the permanent has no birth. Therefore, the view that the world is permanent by clinging to the past extreme is unreasonable. If the person and the god are inherently different, then just as the lineage of the mango tree is different from that of the neem tree, the two, god and man, will not belong to the same lineage, because their respective characteristics are different, and cause and effect are incompatible. Therefore, the continuation of the previous person is impermanent and will be cut off. If the person and the god are inherently
