If that's the case, then just as the aggregates of grasping arise and perish in each moment, if I also change in that way, it is unreasonable. The reason it is unreasonable is that if I say that I am impermanent, it will become annihilation. If it is established by its own nature, then it is unreasonable for the continuum of arising of the later moment from the earlier moment to be uninterrupted, because in terms of its own characteristic, the earlier and later are different and cannot be mutually dependent. If it does not perish, then it will become saying that I am permanent. Furthermore, how can that which is to be grasped become the self of the grasper? It won't, because the agent and the action will become one, therefore the pot and the potter, etc., will also become one. If it is thought that only the aggregates of grasping are not the self, but that my own nature is different from the aggregates of grasping, then it is unreasonable for the self of the grasper to exist as something different by its own nature from the aggregates of grasping that are to be grasped. If these two are established as other by their own entity, then it could be thought that without the aggregates of grasping, I could be apprehended, but in fact, it cannot be apprehended in that way. This is also because if it is established as other by its own characteristic, it cannot be dependent, therefore it can prevent relationship. An other that is unrelated must be observed separately, but in fact, it is not observed in that way, therefore this is the reasoning that shows that establishment as other by its own nature does not exist. Second, as previously stated, in this way it will become possible to be apprehended without relying on the aggregates, therefore I am not other than the aggregates of grasping by my own nature, and the agent and the action will become one, and if it is said to be impermanent, it will become annihilation, therefore I am not the aggregates of grasping themselves. Because there is no reason to cling to a self, I do not exist without relying on the aggregates of grasping. If it is thought that I do not exist in that way, I am not necessarily non-existent either, because it is imputed in dependence on the aggregates, while non-existence, like the son of a barren woman, etc., is not imputed in dependence on the aggregates. Second, it is also unreasonable to think that in the time of past lives, it exists by its own nature in an entity that did not previously exist. If the self of this present life is established as other by its own nature from the self of the previous life, then it would be reasonable to think that I was not produced in the past and was established by its own nature, but

That is impossible. If the two selves, past and future, are different in nature, what fault would there be? If this self of this life is different in nature from the self of the previous life, then this self will also arise independently of the previous self, and the previous self will also remain without ceasing even when the later self arises in its own time, and will also arise in this life without dying in the previous life. If the self arises here without depending on the previous self, what fault would there be? There would be many faults, like this, because the previous self has perished at that time, and because only a self that is different in nature from it has arisen in this life, the previous self will be cut off, because it is unreasonable for the previous self to produce the later self. If the previous self is cut off, then the fruits of karma that follow it will be completely cut off because they have lost their basis, and because there is no enjoyer, the fruits of karma will be wasted. If it is thought that the fruits of karma done by the previous self are enjoyed by the later self, then now also the fruits of karma done by other continuums will be experienced separately by other continuums, and the faults such as "If karma is not done, there will be fear of encountering the uncreated" as mentioned in the eighth chapter will occur. Furthermore, if this self of this life, which is different in nature from the previous self, arises here, then the self that is the basis of the term "I" will change from not having arisen before to arising later, but it is impossible for something that did not arise before to arise later. If this is thought, one will fall into an undesirable fault, like this, if I arise later from not having arisen before, then I will become created. Those who believe that the self is substantial believe that it is either permanent or neither permanent nor impermanent, and cannot be expressed in any way, but if it is created, then it will become impermanent. Furthermore, since there is no creator different from the one who creates that self, how could the self be created? If it is thought that I am created, then the faults of samsara having a beginning and new beings arising that did not exist before will occur, so it is said in the commentary. Fault
