Because it is like that, it is a thing, because non-things cannot function. If the sutra says that the extinction of craving accompanied by joyful desire, and the cessation that is free from desire, is nirvana. Thus, it is only said that craving is extinguished. Like a lamp that has gone out, his mind is completely liberated. It is said that the extinction of a lamp and the extinction of afflictions are merely non-things, so it should not be a thing. If you think so, because it is said that craving is extinguished, it is not just that the extinction of craving is regarded as nirvana, but if nirvana exists, then by its power, craving will be extinguished, which is the meaning of craving being extinguished. The extinction of a lamp is only a metaphor for the extinction of afflictions, and it also shows that if nirvana exists, the mind will be liberated or attain liberation, so this is not evidence of showing non-things. For the time being, nirvana is not a thing that prevents the continuation of afflictions and future similar kinds, because if it is a thing, it will fall into aging, that is, change, and death, that is, the nature of destruction, because things are not confused with such aging and death. There is no thing that does not have the aging of change and the death of destruction. This clarifies that things are not confused with aging and death. If it is the nature of aging and death, then it will not become nirvana either. Furthermore, if nirvana is a thing, then nirvana will become a conditioned phenomenon. Its opposite is that because it is not a conditioned phenomenon, or the inner thing relies on any support at the edge of the place and time, it does not exist. Furthermore, if nirvana is a thing, then how is it that nirvana is not born depending on its own collection of causes? It must be dependent. Its opposite is that there is no thing that does not arise depending on its own collection of causes. In this way, the first and third inferences are established, that is, possessing the three characteristics of conditioned phenomena: birth, destruction, and change. The second inference is established, that is, using conditioned phenomena as the basis to pervade things, thereby preventing the object of pervasion from being a thing by blocking the pervasive way. The second view is that the Sautrantikas and others think that the faults mentioned above will arise.
