One should become accustomed to this. If this is done, even if emptiness without inherent existence is not directly explained in other lifetimes, merely explaining the Dharma of dependent origination will awaken the habitual patterns of the view of emptiness. Just as Ashvaghosa explained only the dependent origination of the four truths to the Tirthika Nirgrantha, and he realized suchness. Emptiness without inherent existence is established dependently. Just as a wheel and so on are designated as a chariot in dependence on the parts of a chariot. That which is designated in dependence on its own parts is emptiness that is unborn by its own nature. This very emptiness that is unborn by its own nature is the Middle Way, having abandoned the two extremes of existence and non-existence, and its path, the trace traversed by the Madhyamikas. Similarly, in the Vigrahavyavartani it says: Whoever said that emptiness and dependent origination, and the Middle Way are of one meaning, to that unequaled supreme teacher, I pay homage to the Buddha! Thus, these three are spoken of as synonyms. Because there is no Dharma that does not dependently arise, and dependent origination is also empty because it is established by its own nature. Therefore, there is no Dharma that is not empty, existing by its own nature. In the Sagaramati Sutra it also says: The wise, having realized the Dharmas of dependent origination, ultimately do not rely on views. They know the Dharmas with causes and conditions, but there is no Dharma nature without causes and conditions. Thus it is said. The third has six aspects: The knowable four truths are untenable, as well as knowing the four truths and so on, and the four fruits are untenable, the Three Jewels are untenable, the agent and karmic results are untenable, worldly conventions are untenable, and transcendent worldly conventions are untenable. The first is: If all these inner and outer phenomena are established by their own nature and not empty, then there would be no arising and no ceasing. In that case, you would not have the four noble truths. Why? Because whatever is established by its own nature is not dependently originated. If it is not dependently originated, it is not impermanent, like a flower in the sky. Therefore, how could there be the truth of suffering? Whatever is impermanent is suffering.

Thus spoke the Blessed One. If it is said that the impermanent phenomena with outflows are said to be suffering, that is self-nature, that is, if one admits that self-nature exists, then suffering should not exist in phenomena. If suffering comes from self-nature, then it is also unborn, so from the origin, what will arise completely? It will not arise. Therefore, suffering is established by self-nature, and the origin does not exist to harm emptiness. Because the origin arises from this (suffering), it is established as the origin. If suffering exists by self-nature, then the truth of the cessation of suffering does not exist, because such a self-nature will never change. Thus, if self-nature exists, it must always exist, therefore, those who hold the position that self-nature exists and refute emptiness are harming the truth of the cessation of suffering. If the truth of the path is established by self-nature, then it exists even without cultivation, so cultivation is unreasonable, and what is the use of cultivating it? If it is admitted that the truth of the path should be cultivated, then your noble path is not self-existent, because it is something that is done. If the path is cultivated in order to attain the cessation of suffering and to abandon the origin, if, as it is said that things are established by self-nature, when the aggregate of suffering arises and the truth of the cessation of suffering does not exist, what cessation does the truth of the path want to attain by abandoning the origin? Because there is no cessation, it is unreasonable to cultivate the path. Secondly, if suffering exists by self-nature in a way that was not completely known before, then how will it be completely known later? It will not change, because self-nature is established as truly existing like the heat of fire, isn't it? Because self-nature and change are contradictory. Just as complete knowledge is impossible, according to you, abandoning the origin, realizing cessation, and cultivating the path are also unreasonable, because the origin has not been abandoned before.
