You, not seeing the reality, shift your own faults onto me. For example, someone riding a horse forgets the horse itself. When the horse is stolen by another, they blame others. Similarly, you ride the horse that is empty of inherent existence and characterized by dependent origination, but because your mind is distracted, you don't notice it, and then you argue with us. Third, what are the faults of others who, not seeing, only find fault with the statement of emptiness? Now, I will explain: If you hold that things arise from their own nature or exist by their own nature, then since inherent nature does not arise from causes and conditions, you hold that things do not depend on causes and conditions. If you conceive of a pot as existing by its own nature, then it does not need causes and conditions such as clay, and the result called 'pot' should not be without a cause. If there is no pot, then the maker, the potter, and the action such as the wheel, and the action of making the pot do not exist. Because these do not exist, birth and cessation also do not exist, and therefore the result is also harmed. In short, cause and effect, birth and cessation, etc., cannot be established, and this is only a fault of those who assert that things exist by their own nature, so it is your own fault that you shift onto us. Second, the reason why all establishments are reasonable in our position is that we hold that whatever arises in dependence on causes and conditions is empty of arising by its own nature, as explained in the scriptures. Why is it said that way? As it says in the *Questions of Ma Dröpa*: "That which is born from conditions is unborn; in it, there is no nature of birth." And in the *Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra*: "Great wisdom, considering the absence of inherent nature, I have said that all dharmas are unborn." And in the *Noble One Hundred and Fifty Verses* it is also said: "All dharmas are empty, in the manner of being without inherent nature." These are the scriptures. Among them, the first scripture prevents arising by its own nature with the reason of dependent origination arising from conditions, and the meaning of dependent origination is inherent nature.

Because it exists, it is said to be the meaning of emptiness. If it is said that dependent arising, which arises and ceases depending on causes and conditions, has inherent existence, and that there is no basis for action if there is no inherent existence, then all of these are refuted. This is to clearly distinguish between the unborn and the inherently unborn. The second scripture states that when the Teacher himself spoke of non-arising, he meant inherently unborn, and he explained it by taking his own intention. Therefore, for the sutras that negate the arising of things, do not take their meaning to be the complete absence of arising, but rather understand it as the meaning of inherently unborn. The third scripture states that the meaning of emptiness is inherent existence, therefore it is said that emptiness has no inherent existence, which is to show the difference between inherent non-existence and non-existence. If it is said that because of inherent establishment, the meaning of emptiness is the meaning of dependent arising, and this is said many times, then what is the meaning of this? If it is like considering a swollen belly to be the meaning of a vase, then the understanding that fruits necessarily arise depending on causes and conditions will also necessarily become the meaning of emptiness, which is unreasonable. Or, if it is thought that the meaning of the sound that expresses dependent arising itself is the meaning of emptiness, then there will be the same fault. If it is thought that dependent arising is the meaning of the force that is actually determined, then it is unreasonable as before, so what is the meaning of this? It is not thought that way. Then how should it be understood? The meaning of emptiness becoming the meaning of dependent arising is possible for the Madhyamikas who have refuted inherent existence by valid cognition, but not for others. For such Madhyamikas, when external and internal things are actually determined to be dependent arising that relies on causes, then relying on the power of that understanding, it will necessarily be determined to be the meaning of emptiness because of inherent existence. Because inherent establishment is considered to be independent of others, and valid cognition recognizes that it is contradictory to dependent arising. Therefore, through dependent arising itself, one can gain certainty about emptiness that refutes inherent existence. Therefore, whenever one sees, hears, or thinks of sprouts, etc., as depending on causes and conditions, one immediately thinks of the way in which that very reason is without inherent existence.
