When its meaning arises in the mind, those that appear in a manner of cutting off elaboration are what is to be negated. Among these, non-affirming negation is when the mind actually cuts off the object to be negated and does not extend or establish another dharma. For example, when a Brahmin is asked whether it is permissible to drink alcohol, and he replies, "I do not drink alcohol," this is merely a complete cutting off of drinking alcohol, and it does not establish that other drinks besides this can or cannot be drunk. As it says in the Blaze of Reasoning: "Negation of non-existence merely prevents the nature of a thing, and does not establish another thing that is similar to it and not this. For example, 'A Brahmin should not drink alcohol' merely prevents this, and does not say whether other drinks besides this can or cannot be drunk." As it is said. Affirmative negation is when the mind, after cutting off the object to be negated, extends or establishes another dharma. For example, when one wants to show a person as a commoner, saying "This is not a Brahmin" is not merely negating a Brahmin, but establishes that this person is a commoner who is inferior to a Brahmin in terms of learning, etc. As it says in the Blaze of Reasoning: "Negation of non-being is when, by negating the nature of a thing, it establishes the nature of another thing that is similar to it and not this. For example, by negating 'This is not a Brahmin,' it establishes that which is similar to a Brahmin, but not a Brahmin, a commoner who is inferior in terms of asceticism and learning, etc." As it is said. There are three ways to extend another dharma: directly, indirectly, and through context. The first is like "Selflessness exists," where both cutting off the object to be negated and extending another dharma are established by a single word. The second is like "The almsgiver does not eat during the day," which is expressed through meaning. These two are each extended directly and indirectly, while having both is like "The almsgiver does not eat during the day, there exists one who is not thin." The third is, for example, when a person is determined to be either a Kshatriya or a Brahmin, but the specific identity is uncertain, saying "This is not a Brahmin," which is not expressed by one's own words. The ways of extending another dharma are determined to be these three, therefore these are affirmative negations, and if none of these three are extended, then it is non-affirming negation other than that.

Therefore, from the ascetic practices of Avalokiteśvara, it is derived: Refutation is shown by meaning, one sentence can accomplish, possessing that does not show one's own words, other than non-existence is other. Thus it is said. Therefore, in the object of sound and the object of wisdom, even if other dharmas are thrown by force, it is not a non-affirming negation. Some say that it is not a non-affirming negation when it is combined with the establishment of the basis, which is unreasonable, because establishing a Brahmin, the Brahmin not drinking alcohol is only a refutation that should be cut off, which does not hinder it, just as the sound is manifest, and the sound being impermanent is hidden, which does not hinder it. Others say that it is also unreasonable to say that other dharmas are thrown when combined with the basis, because things like Brahmins are the basis for measuring whether other dharmas are thrown or not, and not the other dharmas that are thrown. The second has two parts: showing that non-affirming negation is what is to be accomplished, and refuting the disputes about it. The first is: From the "Clear Words," it is said that the reason of other's fame also has what is to be accomplished, and by refuting the fault of the four extremes of arising and ceasing, it can also accomplish non-arising. And in the "Commentary on Entering," it is also said: After proclaiming those four vows, it is explained for the purpose of accomplishing them with reason. Because it is considered that the four vows are non-affirming negations, in all cases of negating self-nature, non-affirming negation should be taken as what is to be accomplished by the reason. Therefore, in the "Clear Words," it is said: Subsequent inferences, etc., are because they only have the result of negating the vows of others. What is said is also that it is only accomplished by severing the proposition of those who have self-nature, and it does not establish the meaning of other dharmas other than that, so it is not negating self-nature, and it does not establish non-existence. Such kinds of things are the meaning of showing non-affirming negation, because the scriptures that show the absence of self-nature and the wisdom that ascertains it, only take severing self-nature as what is to be said and the object, and do not throw other dharmas. In the "Commentary on the Hundred Verses," it is said: The teacher saw that sentient beings were bound by the conceptual thought of clinging to self-nature, and in order to dispel it, the Tathāgatas and Bodhisattvas, without contradicting dependent origination, only showed that all things are without self-nature. Thus, this is briefly the meaning of the Buddha's words, as this treatise of the teacher explains.
