Those things that you consider to be the source of afflictions, although true, are merely imputed, such as forms, sounds, smells, tastes, tactile objects, and dharmas. They do not inherently exist. If they do not inherently exist, then what is this clinging? Although they do not inherently exist, this clinging is like a city of gandharvas, mirages, and dreams. The fifth section has two parts: refuting that the causes of attachment and aversion inherently exist, and refuting that the cause of ignorance inherently exists. The first point is: when they appear from inversion, like a city of gandharvas, etc., and in reality do not inherently exist, but are merely objects of clinging, then how can the characteristics of beauty and ugliness of the six objects, which are like illusory beings and reflections, truly exist? They cannot truly exist, because they arise from inverted dependent origination. As it is said in the scriptures: 'The aggregates arise from self-grasping, and self-grasping itself is false. If the seed is false, how can the fruit that arises from it be true?' These are the reasons for showing that the characteristics of beauty and ugliness are false because they arise from inverted dependent origination. Now, we will demonstrate that they are false by the reason of mutual dependence. Here, beauty and ugliness, like long and short, exist in dependence on each other; without mutual dependence, they do not exist. Therefore, what does the unattractive depend on, that is, what does it rely on to be called attractive? The unattractive thing that is relied upon does not exist without depending on the attractive, therefore, it is unreasonable to think that the attractive thing exists by its own nature. If the unattractive thing depends on the attractive thing, then it does not exist by its own nature. If the thing that is relied upon does not exist by its own nature, then it is contradictory for the thing that relies on it to exist by its own nature. What does the attractive thing depend on, that is, what does it rely on to be called unattractive? The attractive thing that is relied upon does not exist without depending on the unattractive thing, therefore, it is unreasonable to think that the unattractive thing exists by its own nature. In this way, if the characteristic of beauty does not exist by its own nature, then the attachment that arises from it will become pure. If the characteristic of ugliness does not exist by its own nature, then how can the aversion that arises from it exist? Without a cause,

It is for that reason. Second, there are four points: refuting the self-nature of inversion; refuting the self-nature of having inversion; examining whether the object of inversion exists or not and refuting it; showing that such refutation is of great significance. First, there are three points: refuting the self-nature of the inversion of clinging to permanence; refuting the self-nature of clinging to impermanence as non-inversion; merely refuting the establishment of clinging to self-nature. The first point is: Here there are four kinds of inversions, namely, the five aggregates are destroyed every moment and are impermanent, but one thinks they are permanent; the aggregates of appropriation are suffering, but one thinks they are happiness; the body is impure, but one clings to it as pure; and the aggregates do not conform to the nature of self, but one clings to them as self. These four are the cause of ignorance. Among them, clinging to self is of the same kind as ignorance, the former is the cause of the latter, and the other three also become the co-occurring cause. If it is thought that the aggregates are empty of permanence and impermanent, but one clings to them as permanent, such clinging is an inversion, thus establishing it. Then, the aggregates are empty of inherent existence, and impermanence does not exist by its own nature, so how can clinging to the aggregates as permanent be established as the self-nature of inversion? It is not. Similarly, the remaining three should also be inferred. If it is said that suffering is happiness, such clinging is an inversion, and there is no suffering in emptiness, how can clinging be an inversion? That is the reason. In the other two great commentaries, it is said: If it is said that impermanence is permanence, such clinging is an inversion, and there is no permanence in emptiness, how can clinging not be an inversion? That is what it says. The second point is: If it is thought that impermanence is permanence, such clinging is an inversion, thus establishing it. Things do not exist by their own nature, and impermanence also does not exist by its own nature, so how can clinging to impermanence as something that exists by its own nature in emptiness not be an inversion, but exist by its own nature? It does not exist. If clinging to impermanence as non-inversion is established as the self-nature of consciousness, then the object of knowledge of impermanence must also be the reason for the establishment of non-inversion self-nature. Thus, with respect to the aggregates, if both permanence and impermanence, as objects of knowledge, do not exist as non-inverted self-nature, then
