The conceptual thought that is the cause of desire is inverted, while the conceptual thought that is the cause of hatred and anger is the non-reasoned attention that falsely imputes characteristics to what is pleasing and unpleasing. The other two teachers refuted the meaning of the first verse with the second verse, saying that the arising of the three poisons is inherently existent, and explained it as the inversion of pleasing and unpleasing. The Madhyamaka-Prasangika school believes that the arising of the effect from the cause is the basis for establishing selflessness, while the Vaibhashika school believes that the arising of the effect from the cause is the basis for establishing inherent existence. Therefore, it can be explained from both aspects without contradiction. The auto-commentary of the "Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness" states that the three, such as the pleasing, are in order the causes of the three poisons. Since what arises from conceptual thought is self-characterized, it is easy to establish emptiness, so it is also said that it itself is the basis for establishing emptiness. The "Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness" states: "Why is there desire for that, hatred for that, ignorance for that? Therefore, those are born from conceptual thought, and conceptual thought is also not truly existent." Second, there are two parts: refuting by the reason of not having a self as a basis, and refuting by the reason of not having a mind as a basis. First: The existence and non-existence of the self, in whatever way, is not inherently established, which has already been discussed in the examination of the self, etc. Since there is no self, how can the existence and non-existence of the afflictions that depend on that self be inherently established? It will not be. If someone thinks, "Since the existence and non-existence of the self are not inherently existent, what is the reason why the existence and non-existence of the afflictions are not inherently established?" The afflictions, like a painting on a wall, depend on the conceptual thought that is to be generated, so whose basis will these afflictions be? It is not possible without a basis. If this basis is examined, it is either a self or a sentient being, but these have been refuted in detail before, so they are not inherently established. In the absence of a basis, a self or a person, none of the afflictions are inherently existent. Second: If the basis of the afflictions is not admitted to be established before, and there is no self as a basis, but there is an afflicted one.

It is said that afflictions arise dependent on the mind, and the mind also arises together with afflictions. Just as when examining oneself, the self of the object held by the view of self, when examined in five ways, does not exist. Likewise, the afflictions that cause affliction do not exist in five ways for the afflicted one who is to be afflicted. Therefore, it is unreasonable to say that the mind of the afflicted one is itself a mental affliction, because otherwise, the agent and the action would become one. These two do not exist elsewhere by their own characteristics, because otherwise they would become independent. Because they are neither one nor different by nature, mutual dependence and being depended upon also do not exist in essence. Just as when examining oneself, the self held by the view of self does not exist in five ways, likewise, the mind of the afflicted one does not exist in five ways for the affliction, as previously stated, this should be applied accordingly, and this is just a side note. Third, if it is said that afflictions exist by their own nature, because their causes, the pleasant, unpleasant, and inverted, exist by their own nature. Then, the objects of pleasant and unpleasant, and the inverted, are not from their own nature, that is, they do not exist essentially, because they are interdependent and they will prevent these from existing by their own nature. Therefore, any afflictions that arise dependent on the pleasant, unpleasant, and inverted are not self-existent. Fourth, if it is said that afflictions exist by their own nature, because their six objects of focus exist by their own nature. Then, for that, the form that can be seen, the sound that can make a sound and express, the taste that can be tasted and experienced, the smell that can be smelled and distinguished, the touch that can be touched, and the dharma that holds the characteristics or holds the most excellent nirvana of all dharmas, these six are the basis, the object of focus, that abides here. Among them, that which makes the mind happy is desire, that which makes the mind unhappy is hatred, and that which makes the mind ignorant is the basis of ignorance. Because attachment arises from fabricating a pleasant image of them, hatred arises from fabricating an unpleasant image, and ignorance arises from fabricating permanence, self, and so on.
