Then, for someone like you, we have given up hope of liberation. Because those who desire liberation abandon the teachers of other sects and take refuge in the Buddha, but cannot tolerate the sound of selflessness that is not shared by all non-Buddhists, they have come out of the same path as the nomadic monks of the evil path of samsara. I will not say that the Tathagata, who incurs faults by slander, is empty, that is, does not exist. Furthermore, the Tathagata teaches non-self-nature, and wanting to express the meaning of non-perversion, will not say that it is not empty, that is, self-nature exists. Neither of these should be said, nor should it be said that it is neither existent nor non-existent, because in the ultimate truth, none of these four are acknowledged. However, if nominal terms are not used, then the beings to be tamed will not be able to understand, so abiding in the truth of nominal terms, for the sake of the meaning of nominal terms, in front of the beings to be tamed, conceptually postulating emptiness and non-emptiness, and both emptiness and non-emptiness, and neither empty nor non-empty, thus it should be said for the sake of mere postulation. The intention with which the Teacher spoke of emptiness and so on has already been explained in the eighteenth chapter. Just as the Tathagata does not possess the four, such as emptiness, in the ultimate truth, Similarly, how can the four wrong views of permanence and impermanence, etc., which are summarized by the world being permanent and impermanent, and both, and neither, exist in this peaceful state where the Buddha's nature exists? It does not exist. Similarly, how can the meaning held by the four wrong views of having boundaries and not having boundaries, etc., which are summarized by the world having boundaries and not having boundaries, and both, and neither, exist in this peaceful state? It does not exist. Any debater who thinks, "This is the truth, and the others are foolish," this clinging that has become firm, for the Tathagata after Nirvana, whether the Tathagata exists or does not exist, and the four wrong discriminations of both existence and non-existence and neither, are discriminated. The root of the translation of the Clear Word Treatise is: Whoever thinks that the Tathagata exists with firm clinging, he has clung to Nirvana.

Pala. It is said, "They discriminate by saying 'non-existent'." It appears and also translates the commentary that corresponds to it. However, in Buddhapālita, it is translated as, "Whoever grasps tightly with attachment, regarding that which is in Nirvana after passing away, do they discriminate whether the Tathagata exists or does not exist?" And it is said that the commentary that corresponds to this is well translated, so it is explained in that way. According to whose view, the Tathagata is empty because it is established by its own nature, and regarding that, after the Buddha passes into Nirvana, does the Buddha exist, or does not exist, or both existence and non-existence, and neither existence nor non-existence, it is not reasonable to grasp with the mind's thought. Such twelve views, and the two views of whether the body and life are one or different, are said to be the fourteen unanswerable views. Because all of these are based on asking about the self as existing by its own nature, they are not answered. Because those who ask in that way are not vessels for the profound, the meaning of selflessness cannot be explained. Moreover, if permanence and impermanence, etc., are explained, they will also generate views of permanence and annihilation, and in reality, they will not be meaningful. Here, the world refers to the self, and that also refers to the Tathagata, so here, all of those are connected to the Buddha. Although the last two views are not mentioned here, the meaning of those two being unreasonable is fully contained in the previous refutation of whether the aggregates are one or different. Third, those who, with a dull mind, think that the Buddha, the Bhagavan, has completely transcended all the elaborations of the world, and because it is unborn by its own nature, there is no exhaustion of transforming into another by its own nature, regarding that, with the wrong discriminations of permanence and impermanence, etc., as previously explained, those elaborations, those who have become dull in the eye of wisdom, all of them will not see the suchness of the Tathagata, just like a blind person sees the sun. Therefore, in the Three Hundred Verses, it is said, "Those who see me as form, those who know me as sound, they have entered the wrong path, those beings do not see me. The Buddhas see the nature of reality, the guides are the Dharma body, the nature of reality is not knowable, they cannot discern it." It is said in this way. Those words are saying that they truly grasp onto the phenomena of elaboration such as form and sound.
