If one says it exists, it becomes an eternalist view; if one says it doesn't exist, it definitely becomes a nihilistic view. Because, as it is said in the context of "If this is inherently existent, then it will not be non-existent, therefore it is permanent," what is established by its own nature will never become non-existent, so it is an eternalist view; if what is established by its own nature exists at first and then does not exist later, it becomes a nihilistic view, merely existing and being destroyed in an instant. If one acknowledges this, it is not showing the views of eternalism and nihilism. Eternalism and nihilism are abandoned by acknowledging dependent origination, and when dependent origination is spoken of, it is said, "When this exists, that arises." Also, in the commentary on the *Hundred Verses*, it says, "Do you not acknowledge that phenomena are destroyed in an instant? If you do not acknowledge it, then you will become a non-Sugata follower," so if one does not acknowledge the momentary, one falls into the fault of not being a Buddhist. The second part has two points: how to abandon eternalism and nihilism by acknowledging inherent existence, and the answer to that refutation. The first point is: even if one acknowledges that things exist by their own characteristics, one will not fall into views of nihilism or eternalism. Because the arising of the effect, i.e., birth, and the destruction of the cause, i.e., disintegration, both occur continuously, and this continuous existence is samsara. Thus, if the cause ceases and its effect does not arise, that is nihilism; if the cause does not cease and remains in its own essence, that is eternalism. But we do not accept it that way, so there is no fault of eternalism and nihilism. The second part has two points: even if one acknowledges continuity, one cannot abandon eternalism and nihilism, and showing that continuity itself is not inherently established. The first point is: if the continuity of the arising of the effect and the destruction of the cause is existence, then the momentary destruction of the cause, i.e., having done the work of producing the effect and then ceasing, since it does not arise again, the continuity of the cause will become nihilistic. If one believes that things are established by their own characteristics, then the effect will become something else that does not depend on the cause. Even if the effect arises, it does not help the continuity of the cause not ceasing, and since there is no continuity of the cause ceasing and then arising again, the continuity of the cause will become nihilistic. One does not have that fault, because one does not acknowledge that things are inherently established, and the words "depending on what, what arises"

Because of relying on the reason of dependent origination, it is held that cause and effect are neither one nor different in their own nature. If one admits that things are established by their own nature, it will also become permanent, because if things exist by their own nature, then they will not disappear later, because there is no change in their own nature, so it will inevitably become permanent. These reasons are that if things exist by their own nature, then the result should not arise from the previous cause, and the cause should not disappear when the result arises, so it is impossible to avoid the two extremes of permanence and annihilation through these two ways. Furthermore, according to your view, at the time of nirvana without remainder, existence, that is, the continuum of aggregates, is inherently pacified, that is, annihilated, then it will fall into the view of annihilation, and the Buddha said that the view of annihilation should be abandoned. If it is thought that holding such a continuum to be annihilated is not a view of annihilation, then holding it in the same way during samsara will also become not a view of annihilation, because the reason is the same. Second, the continuum of existence that the other party said earlier is inherently existent, which is unreasonable. How so? Here, the last existence is the last consciousness of this life, that is, the dying existence, and the first existence is the consciousness that connects the next life. The last of these is disappearing, existing as a cause, and the first is existing as a result, and these two existences are called samsara. Then, does the first existence arise from the last existence that has disappeared, has not disappeared, or is disappearing? If the last existence has disappeared, then it is unreasonable for the first consciousness to arise from it, because one's own cause has disappeared before oneself, and there is no cause at that time, and it will also become possible for sprouts to grow from burnt seeds, which is not what is desired. The so-called time when the last existence has not disappeared, because disappearing is said separately, it does not refer to the dying existence disappearing. Even if there is no such situation, it is stopping by grasping the extreme of investigation. It is unreasonable for the first existence to arise from it, and if it arises, there will be many faults. Among them, the fault of having no cause is that when the dying existence has not disappeared, the first consciousness of the next life arises, then the two will exist at the same time, so the cause cannot produce.
