And therefore will give birth to a child. Non-things, that is, destruction, do not arise by nature from non-things, because the transformation of destructible things does not have the power to produce fruit by nature, and if destruction arises from the nature of destruction, then the daughter of a barren woman will also give birth to a child. Non-things, that is, destruction, do not arise by nature from things, that is, arising, and if they arise in that way, then just as things that have not been destroyed produce destruction that is incompatible with them, so also darkness will arise from a lamp. If we examine in this way, arising and destruction have no nature, so seeing the two as having nature is seeing through the obscuration of ignorance. Or, if arising and destruction have nature, then they will depend on things or non-things, and if the two have no nature when examined. Because there is no basis, how can there be arising and destruction? Therefore, seeing the two as having nature is seeing through the obscuration of ignorance. Whether things exist or not has no nature, as the Treatise says, "Things do not arise from things." What is said in the Clear Words is what Buddhapālita said. The second is: Furthermore, if some things have nature, then arising and destruction will also have nature, but that does not exist, because it is not produced by nature. If it is said that not being produced by nature is not established, it is not not established, because in this way things do not arise from themselves, and arising from others is also not existent. Arising from both self and other is also not existent, so how can it be produced by nature? It will not be produced by nature. This has already been said in the first chapter. The second has three: If it is admitted that things have nature, then the way of becoming permanent and annihilated. Although it is admitted in that way, refuting the answer that eliminates that fault. Summarizing the meaning of that refutation. The first is: The self-nature production of things does not exist in any way, and this must be admitted without any doubt. If one does not now admit that things have nature, then it will become a permanent and annihilated view that is extremely contradictory to the scriptures. Because that thing is permanent
