Then, how can it simultaneously become self-existent and not change? If it changes like that, then death and birth would simultaneously become self-existent, and that would no longer be existence itself, because they contradict each other, like light and darkness. The way they contradict each other is as explained in the eleventh chapter before, or like a sprout, the two moments of arising and ceasing are like light and darkness, and if arising and ceasing are established by their own characteristics, then the cessation of the sprout would become the dharma of the sprout and the dharmata of the sprout, because self-nature has no reversal, so it must change at all times, therefore, if arising and ceasing occur simultaneously, then both arising and ceasing will also occur simultaneously. The remaining analysis of destruction has already been explained in the seventh chapter, so it will not be repeated. Here, in the Lamp of Wisdom, it says that destruction has a cause, because it is the characteristic of conditioned phenomena, just like arising. To this, some Shravaka schools arrange it this way. The fault of this inconclusive reason, which arranges two faults, is: the destruction of wisdom and sound, the last flame, and the last mind of an Arhat and mental factors, these are the characteristics of conditioned phenomena, but they are not caused, so they are uncertain. To this, the Clear Words says: Their destruction is also the cause of arising, so it is caused, and the destruction of the last moment of wisdom etc., also requires proving that destruction is not without cause, and it must be proven in the same way, so there is no uncertainty. This is the one that was previously destroyed by destruction, and that is also the tenet of Chandrakirti, who considers things to exist. In the Lamp of Wisdom, it also says below, after speaking as before, that what has been destroyed and disappeared has no cause, because it does not exist. For example, like something that does not exist at all. This is the tenet that does not accept destruction as a thing. Therefore, saying that destruction is the characteristic of conditioned phenomena, but without cause, is said according to the opponent's commitment, not one's own tenet. The reason why the example of "like arising" is not established is that the nature of a thing arises from something that did not appear before, therefore, obtaining its own nature itself is called arising. This is what is said. The arising that is said to be the characteristic of conditioned phenomena is the opponent's.

Speaking of the designations of vases and so on, it is acknowledged that they are separate entities. Since such a thing is not established, it means that birth is not established as having a cause. In the Lamp of Wisdom, the non-establishment of birth as an entity is stated as the proof that the example is not established. In the Clear Words, the two previous assertions are not contradictory, because things that exist as entities are established as being born. The meaning of the former is as previously stated, while the meaning of the latter is merely the establishment of the opponent's tenet that birth is an entity. In the Clear Words, it is unreasonable to explain that the example is not established for that reason, because images and so on, which are not entities, are acknowledged to be with cause. This is the reason why even if the existence of birth as an entity is refuted, it does not mean that birth is not established as having a cause. Secondly, how can arising exist without ceasing? It cannot exist. If it exists in that way, then things must be separate from destruction, because impermanence is never absent from things. How can arising be naturally existent together with destruction? It cannot be naturally existent, because if it were to be so, then birth and death would occur simultaneously, and that would not be existence. This has already been said. Thirdly, how can those arising and ceasing, which are not naturally existent, which are either together simultaneously or not together at different times, be naturally established? They cannot be, because if they are naturally established, they will not go beyond those two ways of existing. If it is thought that they are not naturally established as being together or not together, but are established in a way that cannot be expressed as those two, then what is it that is established as being inexpressible? If it is thought that it is a mixture of those two, then those two have not been established separately before, so there is no mixture. If the meaning of inexpressible is that it cannot be definitely grasped by the mind, then just like the blue and white of a barren woman's son, because arising and ceasing are not naturally existent, their causal time is also not naturally existent. The second has three parts: refuting arising and ceasing based on the support of exhaustion and non-exhaustion; refuting arising and ceasing based on the support of things; refuting arising and ceasing based on the support of emptiness and non-emptiness. First,
