Does the effect arise by its own nature while existing in the collection? Or does it arise by its own nature while not existing? If the effect arises by its own nature from the collection of causes and conditions, and if the effect exists in the collection of causes and conditions, then how can it be said that the effect arises by its own nature from the collection of causes and conditions? This does not arise, because the effect and the support are interdependent, for example, the yogurt in the wooden bowl is not produced by the wooden bowl. Furthermore, what already exists is already established, like the vase in front of us, and does not need to arise again. If you say that the nature of the effect exists in the causes and conditions, and the conditions make it manifest, so even though it exists, arising is meaningful, then if the manifestation already exists, there is no need to arise again; if it does not exist, it will become the side of arising from what did not exist before. If the effect arises from the collection of causes and conditions, and the effect does not exist in the collection, then how can it be said that the effect arises by its own nature from the collection? This does not arise, because it does not exist there, like trying to extract sesame oil from sand. In short, if the effect exists by its own nature, there is no need for it to arise; if it does not exist in the collection, it cannot arise by its own nature. Secondly, furthermore, if the effect exists in the collection of causes and conditions in a dependent way, then the collection must be able to be apprehended by any of the four valid cognitions, but the collection itself cannot be apprehended by valid cognition, so it does not exist in it, like yogurt does not exist in a wooden bowl. If something does not exist somewhere, it does not arise from there, like trying to extract oil from sand. The effect arises from the collection, therefore, the existence of the effect in the collection is established by inference, if you think so, then whatever exists somewhere does not arise from there by its own nature, like the essence of yogurt does not arise from a wooden bowl, why not accept such an inference to prove that the effect does not exist in the collection? If you say that both sides contradict inference, just as it is unreasonable for the effect to exist in the collection, it is also unreasonable for the effect not to exist in the collection, if you think so, we are not trying to prove that the effect does not exist by its own nature in the collection of causes and conditions, but to prevent others from inferring that the effect exists by its own nature in the collection.

Similarly, we do not assert that the aggregate inherently possesses a result, but rather to eliminate the view of others who consider the aggregate to be inherently established as without a result, thereby eliminating the two extremes of existence and non-existence, and wishing to establish the Middle Way. If the aggregate of cause and conditions does not have a result, then the causes and conditions of a sprout would become the same as non-causes and conditions such as fire and coal. If they are the same as having no result, then whether the causes and conditions of a sprout are inherently existent or non-existent would also be the same. Secondly, from what reason does one examine whether the aggregate has a result or not? The aggregate of the two, cause and condition, does not have the ability to directly produce a result. However, the aggregate of conditions only provides some assistance to the actual cause, and for that cause to produce a result, if it is said that the cause gives some of its causal power to the result and then ceases, and the result that has been assisted by the given cause also arises, then if the cause gives the cause of producing the result to the result and then ceases, then the nature of the cause that gives rise to the result and the cause that ceases will become two separate entities. That is unreasonable, because the cause that gives remains after its own arising, so it is permanent, and the cause that ceases becomes impermanent, and it is contradictory for one cause to have both permanence and impermanence. If, in order to avoid one cause becoming two separate entities, the cause does not give the cause of producing the result to the result, but rather completely ceases before, then after the cause, like a seed, has ceased, the result that arises, like a sprout, will only become not directly produced from the cause seed, thus becoming arising without a cause. If one thinks, how is this examination of whether, before the sprout, the cause of the seed completely ceases, or becomes either of the two situations of ceasing and not ceasing? If cessation is established by its own nature, then before the sprout, when the seed tends towards cessation, the act of cessation must be completed, because cessation is the nature of the thing that ceases, and a dharma and a dharmin that are established by their own nature will never be separated at any time, i.e., birth.
