To consider the mother and the later fruit, as well as the past that is destroyed and the future that is unborn, while also considering the previous moment as past and the subsequent moment as future, is a darkness of illusion. The Vaibhashikas believe that each sprout, etc., exists in three times: past, present, and future. Therefore, they believe that the sprout exists even in the future and past times, and they believe this to be the case for other things as well. Among them, Dharmapala believes that when sprouts, etc., go from the future to the present and from the present to the past, they abandon the entity of the future and the present, but do not abandon the trace of that time. For example, when a gold vessel is broken and made into another vessel, and when milk turns into yogurt, the shape and taste change, but the color does not change. Svaraghosha believes that each time possesses the characteristics of all three times: past, present, and future. However, depending on which characteristic is dominant, it is classified as past, etc. For example, a man may have a strong desire for one woman, but that does not mean he has no desire for other women. Mitravarman believes that when a thing, such as a sprout, goes through different stages such as the future, it is classified as the future, etc. For example, when a bead on an abacus is placed in the ones, hundreds, or thousands column, it is considered "one," etc. Buddhadāsa believes that, for example, a woman can be called a mother or a daughter depending on what she is referring to. Similarly, a thing can be classified as a different time depending on its previous and subsequent states. Among these, the first view is that of the transformationists, which is the same as the view of the Samkhya school. The second view confuses the definition of time. The third view believes that if sprouts, etc., have a function that is different from their own essence, they will become unconditioned dharmas. If the essence is the same, then the state of functioning and not functioning will not exist. The fourth view believes that for each time, such as the past, it is necessary to say that there are three times: past, present, and future. Therefore, each time will have three times. Furthermore, if sprouts, etc., still exist in their own form in the past and future times, then why say that sprouts, etc., have been destroyed and not yet produced? Therefore, the root verses and commentary of the Abhidharmakosha refute this, and explain the definition of the three times as described above, and believe that the past and future that have been destroyed and not yet produced are non-existent.
