That which has not attained its essence is called the future. There are three refutations of this. Generally refuting the inherent existence of the three times. Individually refuting the views of one's own and other schools. The manner of establishing the three times in conventional terms. The first has three parts. Refuting the inherent establishment of the two times that depend on or do not depend on the past. Applying that reasoning to the other two times. Applying the three dharmas to other groups. The first has two parts. Refuting the inherent establishment of the time that depends on the past. Refuting the inherent establishment of the time that does not depend on the past. The first is: If the present and the future exist by their own nature, then since they do not go beyond the two, if the arising of the present and the future depend on the past time, then the arising of the present and the future should exist in the past time. If those two times exist by their own nature, then their dependence on the past should also become a nature established by its own characteristics. Such a nature should not be confused in any place or time, because the transformation of nature is never reasonable. If you think that although the nature of a lamp has no darkness, it is not pervasive because it depends on mutual opposition? If you say that light and darkness are inherently established by their own nature, then although they do not exist mutually, dependence is like what is to be established, so it must be established. That is not harmful. If those two times exist in the past time, then those two should also become the past, and in that case, the past cannot be established either, because the past is established by what has passed from the present, and the future is established by that future, and if there is no present, it is not allowed. Furthermore, if you want to eliminate the faults mentioned above and think that the arising of the present and the future do not exist in that past time, then how can it depend on the past time? It does not become so. The second is: If, according to the views of others who say that the earlier time is permanent, the two times do not need to depend on the past? It is not that those two times are established without depending on the past, because after the sprout and so on have obtained their own nature, what has not surpassed or passed from it must be established as the present, so the present not depending on the past is contradictory. Therefore, the future must also depend on the past through the present, because the future is established as the future by the present.

Therefore. If one does not depend on those two (past and future), then one will also not depend on others. Because one does not depend on anything, one will be as non-existent as a donkey's horn. Thus, whether depending on or not depending on the past, it is because of the lack of inherent existence. The present and future times are also not existent by their own nature. Second, similarly, if one knows that the past and future, which depend on or do not depend on the present, and the past and present, which depend on or do not depend on the future, are without inherent existence, then the previous reasoning that refutes the existence of the past depending on or not depending on the two with inherent existence, one should also know to refute with that (reasoning) the remaining time divisions of the past, the present and future depending on or not depending on the two with inherent existence. As it says: The past and the future, if they depend on the present. Up to: Therefore, the past and the future time also do not exist. And: The past and the present, if they depend on the future. Up to: Therefore, the past and the present time also do not exist. One should recite and translate in this way. Third, with that (reasoning) one can know how to analyze the order of the three times, that is, the three of good, non-good, and unspecified, which are encompassed by the three of superior, inferior, and middle, etc., and the three of arising, abiding, and ceasing, and the three of before, after, and middle, and the three realms, and the three of learner, non-learner, and neither of those two, and the two and many encompassed by one, etc., one should know to make separate explanations for all those related to three. Briefly speaking, the superior and inferior two are middle, the superior and middle two are inferior, the inferior and middle two are superior, one and two are many, one and many are two, two and many. If one depends on one and exists by its own characteristic, then the one that is depended on should exist in that place and time where it exists, and if it does not exist, then one will not depend on those. It is also unreasonable to exist without depending on each other, therefore it is not non-existent by its own nature, but it is non-existent by the power of conventional terms, one should understand others by this. The second (part) has two: refuting the time accepted by other schools, refuting the time accepted by our own school that speaks of real entities. First, time exists by its own nature, that is, a moment and an instant.
