If someone says that time has other limiting meanings such as moments, days and nights. If time is something that exists differently from moments and so on, even if it is measured by moments and so on, time is not a real existence that can be grasped by moments and so on. Because it does not exist in that way, time will not be grasped by moments and so on that are different in nature from itself. If time is constant and is revealed by moments and so on, just as it is said in the scriptures: time ripens all things, time gathers beings, time awakens people from sleep, and it is very difficult to transcend time. If someone thinks that there is such a nature, then the time that is revealed and grasped by moments and so on does not exist as a real existence. If it exists differently from moments and so on, it should be able to be cognized, but in reality it cannot be cognized. Furthermore, if someone thinks that time is a naturally existing conditioned or unconditioned phenomenon, then neither of these two cases is established, because as "birth, dwelling, and destruction, etc., are not established, therefore there is no conditioned phenomenon" etc. have already been negated. Such a time cannot be cognized by any measure, so how can the ungrasped time be measured by moments and so on? It cannot be measured. The second case is: if it is admitted that time is not constant, but the time that is nominally established depending on conditioned form and so on can become the object of expression of words such as moments and so on. If form and other things do not exist, then where does time, which is different in nature from them, exist? Because it does not exist, if time is established depending on form and other things, then according to the reasons that have already been said and will be said, if nothing is naturally existing, then how can the time that depends on it be naturally existing? It will not be naturally existing. The third case is: here the three times, in the commentary on the *Śataśāstra* it says: the future is what has not arrived at the present time, the past is what has already passed, and the present is what has been born but has not yet stopped. The present is the main thing because the present can be cognized, not the future and the past.

Distinguishing the two mundane times is not the main point. It is established as such. Among them, what has not yet come and what has passed are used to establish the future and the past, which is the present. Therefore, the present is the main time, and the other two are not the main ones. What has not yet become the present also includes the sky and rabbit horns, etc. To eliminate these, the Abhidharma says, "There is a cause but it has not arisen." For example, there is a cause for a sprout, but it has not yet grown or become a sprout, which is the future. If the basis for not yet becoming the present does not have a cause to arise at all, then what has not yet become is not the future. Thus, what has not yet come is the present, and what has not yet passed is the fruit of sprouts, etc., but the fruits are not established in the future time. In this regard, the future fruit and its cause have not perished after each completing their function, so it is said that the cause and effect have not been exhausted, as stated in the Madhyāntavibhāga, etc. If merely deviating from the present is established as the past, then the sky, etc., and the future will also become the past. Therefore, what has passed from the present is the destruction of the present. It is also said to be arising and ceasing. For example, when the destruction of a sprout is established as the past, then arising is not for the past, but for the past cause of the past, i.e., the sprout. When the sprout becomes the past, the fruit, the sprout, and its cause have perished after each completing their function, so it is said that both the cause and effect have been exhausted. The present is the time when sprouts, etc., have arisen but have not ceased. At that time, its own cause has ceased, but the fruit itself has not ceased, so it is said that the cause has been exhausted, but the fruit has not been exhausted. Thus, the destruction of a sprout is the past time of the sprout, the non-arising of a sprout is the future time of the sprout, and the formation of a sprout without destruction is the present time of the sprout. Therefore, all three times, past, present, and future, are calculated based on the time of destruction, non-arising, and arising without destruction of the sprout and other things themselves. It is not that what is not present in the present time spoken by the one who makes the time designation is not the present, because that is the present relative to the speaker. Therefore, the cause comes first.
