In order to turn them away from non-virtue. The Buddhas, in some sutras, also designated the name 'I,' that is, they established that there is a self. Those who do good and turn away from non-virtue, bound by the firm view of 'I,' like a bird tied with a very long string, even if they go very freely, they cannot transcend the three realms and go to the city of liberation, for those intermediate trainees. In order to loosen the view of destruction and to generate the desire for nirvana, in some sutras, it is also shown that there is no self. Those who, due to the peculiarity of previous habits, have a special faith in the profound Dharma, the superior trainees who are able to fathom the meaning of the profound scriptures, it is also shown that neither 'I' nor 'no-self' are established by their own nature. In the "Inquiry of Light-Bearer," it is also said: Light-Bearer, what is called 'I' is one extreme. What is called 'no-self' is the second extreme. What is in the middle of these two extremes? That is formless, cannot be shown, has no support, has no appearance, has no consciousness, has no place. Light-Bearer, this is called the Middle Way, which is the wisdom of rightly distinguishing all dharmas. And in the "Garland of Jewels," it is also said: Thus, neither self nor no-self can be truly found. The view of self and no-self, therefore, the Great Hero (Buddha) refutes. What is seen and heard, etc., the Victorious One (Buddha) said is neither true nor false. Because of the change of direction due to disagreement with the direction, therefore both are not the real meaning. Although in conventional terms, both self and no-self exist, in ultimate truth they do not exist, therefore they are in accordance with the fact that they cannot be truly found, and both the self that conforms to no-self and its opposite are not the real meaning. This order comes from the "Hundred Treatises": First, reject non-merit, in the middle, reject self, and finally, reject all views, whoever knows this is a wise person. It is in accordance with what is said, such as "How are grammarians?" Thus, in order to refute the object of clinging to the person as an independent and self-sufficient real thing, it is said that there is a self that accumulates karma and experiences the results, in order not to fall into the lower realms and to be placed in the higher realms, in order to generate a definite understanding of karma and its results.

It is like this. Refuting the object of clinging to a person as an independent and self-sufficient entity, thereby showing that there is no such self, and not refuting the object of clinging to the aggregates as real, is merely relaxing the view of the perishable aggregate, not eradicating it. Therefore, the sixteen emptinesses and selflessness, The paths based on the non-existence of a person's independent and self-sufficient entity are not the means of exhausting afflictions. The scriptures that prevent both the existence of a person by their own nature and the prevention of its negation by their own nature are the path to exhaust all afflictions. That is, "The Buddhas," etc., first relying on the word of the agent, and then also establishing it as "I," etc., is an explanation connected with the three words of action. Now, fundamentally, if we explain according to the literal meaning of the word of the agent, such as "The Buddhas," connected with the third word of action, then seeing that conditioned phenomena perish moment by moment, the relationship of cause and effect is unreasonable. Therefore, the Samkhyas and others, in order to rely on it, established that there is a permanent self. Because of the seeming reasonableness of the reason, seeing that there is no person who transmigrates from the previous life to this life, and from this life to the next life, therefore, the Charvakas also showed that there is no such self. But the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, showed that neither self nor non-self is established by its own nature. Second, if the Buddhas showed that neither self nor non-self is established by its own nature, then what did they show to exist? If there is something that should be spoken of truthfully, then it would be shown, but the thing that should be spoken of truthfully is the opposite, that is, it does not exist. At that time, the Buddhas did not show anything. That is because, in truth, the object of the mind's activity is the opposite. That is also because all dharmas in truth are the nature of not being born and not ceasing, similar to Nirvana, that is, becoming like it. Or, elaboration will cease due to emptiness, just as how elaboration ceases due to viewing emptiness. The question should be answered, and then the meaning of the last two lines is that realization. Or, because previously there was no object of inner and outer things, the two views of the perishable aggregate cease, that is all.
