Initially, I first contemplate whether it exists by its own nature. The second part has two points: refuting that the self and the aggregates are of the same nature, and refuting that the self and the aggregates are of different natures. The first point is: The object of such clinging to a self—the self—if it exists by its own nature, then it will not exceed two ways of existing. It should be examined whether it is one or different from the aggregates, which are established by their own characteristics. One and not one, if one is cut off, then the other must be completely cut off, because the three aggregates are contradictory. After examining in this way, if the aggregates and the self, both established by their own characteristics, are one entity, then the self will become something that arises and ceases in each moment, because the aggregates arise and cease. Other schools do not think so, and our own school does not allow thinking so either. The basis for the arising of the thought "I"—the self—if it is established as one with the aggregates by its own nature, then it will also become one with the aggregates of this life, and in that life, there will be no other birth, but it will occur here, and it will become having a beginning, as explained in the twenty-seventh chapter. Furthermore, if it arises and ceases separately in each moment, then it will become separate by its own characteristics. If that is the case, then one will not remember past lives, saying "I was a king, I was a child," because the self at that time has perished like the body, and in this life, a self with a different nature from that self has arisen. Furthermore, just as there are many aggregates, the self will also become many, and the self is merely a synonym for the aggregates, so admitting that the self is a real entity becomes meaningless, and the object to be taken will itself become the taker, so there will be the fault of the action and the agent becoming one. Therefore, one should generate a firm conviction through these reasons that the self and the aggregates are not established as one by their own existence. The second point is: If the self is established as different from the aggregates by its own nature, then the self will be separated from the characteristics of conditioned phenomena represented by the aggregates—arising, ceasing, and abiding—just as it is separated from the characteristics of horses and cows. If that is the case, it will become non-self, because it is unconditioned, like nirvana and flowers in the sky. The object of innate self-grasping.

Among the two, the object is also unreasonable, because it is unconditioned. Or the characteristics of the five aggregates, which can be forms, can be experienced, can be taken as signs, can be manifestly constructed, and can be individually cognized in various realms, become other entities from their own nature. If this is admitted, just as the mind is grasped as being different from form, the self would also be seen separately as being different in nature from the aggregates. If one holds to this, it is also not correct. If other schools say that the self is different from the aggregates as another entity, this is not a refutation. Although they say it is another entity, they do not speak as they do, but rather speak by focusing on innate wisdom. What then? Because they do not understand the meaning of what is imputed in dependence, they are afraid of merely saying that the self is a nominal designation, so they fall away from even the conventional truth, are deceived by seemingly logical reasons, and speculate and speak about the nature of a self that is another entity apart from the aggregates. When examining actions and agents, etc., it is said that the self and what is closely taken are established in mutual dependence, so they also negate the self that is examined as being established in convention. Thus, if the self were established by its own nature, then the self and the aggregates would have to be established as either one or different, established by their own characteristics. And seeing that both of these are harmed by reason, one becomes certain that the self is not established by its own nature at all. This is the attainment of the view that realizes the object of the innate ego-grasping of the view of the perishable as being without inherent existence. The second is: Then, when examining whether the object of the innate view of the perishable, which grasps "this is mine," is established by its own characteristics, if the self does not exist by its own nature, how could what is mine exist by its own nature? Therefore, one will come to realize that what is mine is also without inherent existence. Even though the wisdom that realizes that "I" is without inherent existence does not itself grasp what is mine as being without inherent existence, when the mind is directed by way of analyzing whether what is mine has inherent existence or not, it will be realized without relying on other proofs, based on the action of the previous wisdom. Therefore, the scriptures say that it is established by the action of the previous reasoning, and do not mention other reasoning. Thus, when it is determined that both "I" and "mine" are without inherent existence
