Therefore, one should firmly establish conviction in the way of the two truths, where all these classifications are perfectly suited to the absence of inherent existence. This is the explanation of the fourteenth chapter, which is the nature of eight verses, called "Examination of Encounter." Second, refuting the assertion that things taken closely by causes and conditions exist inherently, divided into three: explaining the text of the treatise; combining it with definitive scriptures; summarizing the meaning and indicating the name. First, here someone says that things exist inherently because there are causes and conditions that produce sprouts and actions, such as seeds and ignorance, which are closely taken. This is the way of connecting the 'Clear Words,' but Buddhapālita said: You also assert that things arise dependently and also say that they are without inherent existence, so how can things both arise and be without inherent existence? If the inherent existence of things does not arise from causes and conditions, then what else arises from them? If the inherent existence of cloth does not arise from the cause of threads, then does only the inherent existence of threads arise? If nothing arises, then how can one say that it arises? Do you not see the horse while riding it? You also say that things arise dependently, but you do not see their very absence of inherent existence. He said that things cannot have even a little inherent existence established by inherent existence, but holding that things arise depending on causes and conditions is contradictory. This treatise connects by explaining that these two are not contradictory. Distinguishing the confusion of these two is the most important key of all reasonings. Thus, to refute the assertion of inherent establishment, divided into two: refuting the inherent existence of things; showing that if one asserts inherent existence, one cannot go beyond the extreme of clinging. First, divided into two: refuting the proof of inherent existence; revealing the harm to inherent existence. First, divided into three: the actual meaning; thereby showing the negation of the other three extremes; disparaging the view that aims at refutation. First, divided into two: showing that inherent existence does not need causes and conditions and is contradictory; revealing the definition of inherent existence according to one's own system. First

If formations and sprouts, etc., had intrinsic existence, it would not be reasonable for them to arise from causes and conditions such as ignorance and seeds. For that which exists intrinsically does not need a producer. If it exists prior to arising, then arising becomes meaningless. But if one thinks that only intrinsic existence, which did not exist before, arises in dependence on causes and conditions, then, since it arises from causes and conditions, the intrinsic existence of the result becomes something made. If one thinks that being something made is just our assertion, then how can it be said that it is both something made and intrinsic existence? It cannot be said, because the two are mutually contradictory. In this regard, artificial and non-artificial are direct opposites, so if one is excluded from a single basis, the other must be completely excluded. Something made is pervaded by artificiality, and intrinsic existence, that is, nature, is pervaded by non-artificiality, so being something made and being nature cannot coexist on a single basis. In the world, the heat of water and kaikeeru, etc., are transformed by counterfeiters into fake rubies, etc., but it is not said that those are their intrinsic existence. Then, in the world, the essence of fire's heat and rubies, etc., is said to be their intrinsic existence, so how can anything that is made not be nature? If in the world artificiality is not called intrinsic existence or nature, we also acknowledge that here. Since that is the case, fire's heat is known in the world as fire's intrinsic existence or nature, but that is also not fire's nature, because it lacks the characteristics of nature. For fire appears in dependence on causes and conditions such as fire mirrors, and its heat is the same as that. Therefore, since it is something made, like the heat of water, it is not intrinsic existence, and this should be clearly understood. Here, although the heat of water and the heat of fire are the same in being produced by causes and conditions, they are not the same in being artificial or non-artificial, so whether or not they are intrinsic existence is also different. Although worldly people generally think this way, those who assert entities do not think that there is any difference between the heat of water and the heat of fire in terms of being born intrinsically or non-intrinsically. Therefore, they do not acknowledge the way in which, if something is established as artificial in the world, the term intrinsic existence is not used, and their own system is like that.
