Moreover, here, in order to establish the object of practice on the path to the Great Vehicle—the selflessness of phenomena—and in order to accommodate those of the Śrāvakayāna lineage, two ways of establishing external objects are made. This is not done because the Vijñānavāda school itself nominally accepts external objects. Because no wise person accepts that the meaning established by nominal valid cognition is harmed by ultimate valid cognition. So, would the practice of the Śrāvakayāna path become inverted, because without establishing external objects, one determines that external objects are impermanent and practices? There is no such fault, because it is by determining the aggregates of form, etc., distinguished by external objects, as impermanent, etc., and habituating oneself to them. The third point is that in the second chapter, the selflessness of persons alone is taught in terms of the common path, and then in the third chapter, the selflessness of phenomena is established. So, what is the intention of the Prajñāpāramitā Sūtras and other scriptures that teach that all phenomena from form to omniscience are without inherent existence? "These distinct entities abide, They depend on those distinct entities. That is indeed deceptive, Those distinct entities are also deceptive. From the aspect of the grasped and the grasper, There is no other characteristic. Therefore, because of the emptiness of characteristics, It is well explained as without inherent existence. The distinctions of the aggregates, etc., Accomplish all characteristics. That which has distinctions is also that itself. That also lacks the characteristics of those." And so on, it is explained. The first two verses explain the intention of all phenomena being taught as without inherent existence, without characteristics, etc., which is also the main way of explaining it that is not contradictory to the Vijñānavāda view, and the third verse says that the intention of without inherent existence can also be explained in this way, which is another way of explaining it. It is unreasonable to connect this with the Sautrāntika school, because most Śrāvakayāna schools do not accept the Mahāyāna scriptures, so it is inevitable that they do not explain their intention. And, the word "also" in "That also lacks the characteristics of those" includes the former, so it is the Vijñānavāda school's own view. Therefore, the meaning of the first verse is that the phenomena are made distinct, that is, "This is the cause, this is the effect," etc., two kinds of phenomena are distinguished.

Everything is distinguished by the consciousness that looks outward, not by self-cognizance directly, because in its essence, the appearance of duality has vanished. Even within the consciousness that looks outward, it is distinguished by realization, because in it, the appearance of objects seems to be described separately in a distant manner, and the subject also appears to be distinct from it, like separate entities of grasper and grasped. Therefore, all dualistic phenomena exist based on the appearance of separate entities of grasper and grasped. As in "how, how one thinks," etc., through reasoning, the appearance of separate entities of grasper and grasped is not established, but rather it is established that the appearance of separate entities of grasper and grasped is mistaken. Therefore, the separate appearance of all dualistic phenomena is also mistaken. Therefore, the signified, which is established as name and sign, must also be signified from the distant appearance of objects; the signifier must also be signified by the aspect of separate entities of grasper and grasped that appear as subjects, otherwise it is impossible to distinguish other names and signs, and because it is empty of other entities of grasper and grasped, the characteristic is also called emptiness of truth. Therefore, considering this, the sutras speak of selflessness and characteristiclessness. The meaning of the third verse is: when signifying the characteristics of form, such as being corruptible, etc., the various distinct signifieds, because "this signifies," all signifiers are distinguished by being the agent; because "this is signified," all signifieds are distinguished by being the object, and the agent and object themselves are also empty of truth, because if it were not so, the characteristic would become a different entity from the agent, and the signified would become a different entity from the object. Also considering that the agent and object are empty, the sutras such as the Prajnaparamita Sutra speak of all phenomena as being characteristicless and selfless. Fourth, regarding the classification of valid cognition and its result, there is a general classification and individual classifications. First, all that is to be severed is included in the two, object and subject; all that severs is included in the two, grasped-aspect and grasper-aspect; and the result of severing is included in the two, self-cognizance and other-cognizance. Other schools and the Vaibhashika school of our own tradition, etc., consider valid cognition and its result to be separate entities, which is unreasonable, because there is another that establishes them in between. Thus, if the appearance of the object does not arise, then the realization of the object itself will not be established.
